Sprint to Battle Proposed AT&T / T-Mobile Merger
Sprint needs to STFU and Get out of others business
This is going to benefit so many people, In my area, the combined AT&T/T-Mobile towers is going to finally make signal what both company's should have, I have had both AT&T and T-Mobile, and the Tampa bay area I live in has completely different coverage for both carriers... The combination is going to be great.
AT&T is rapidly developing, and compared to Verizon, AT&T is much less expensive a month... Sure, for now you get unlimited data at Verizon; but do you even use enough for that to matter?
It ticks me off that nobody complained when Verizon bought ALLTEL, giving Verizon a SUBSTANTIAL LEAD...

It's going to benefit people who own large shares of AT&T, and that's about it. If they really cared about improving call quality, they could easily work out roaming deals with one another.
As for the Verizon/Alltel comparison: 1) Alltel was not a nationwide carrier; and 2) buying it did not give Verizon complete control of CDMA in the US.
How is it going to give AT&T full GSM power, there are plenty of smaller regional GSM carriers...
And it would only benefit large shareholders because that is where your money would go. This deal would mean that AT&T would have virtually no competition for GSM handsets (meaning there is no incentive to give good deals on them) or people who need phones that work internationally. Long term effect is that AT&T would not only be big enough to charge what it wants for phones AND plans, it would also be big enough to actually get away with it.

As for Alltel, it didn't have native coverage in NYC, LA, Chicago, San Franc...

The issue is spectrum rights. With VZW and ATT acquiring the last bit of spectrum, no startup carrier to create choice would emerge. It doesn't matter if you go to cricket. It doesn't matter if you go to Teedawg Wireless or Slammer Communicatications. In the end, it is only ATT's network or VZW's network. You still play by their pricing tiers and rules no matter who you buy from.Teedawg and Slammer would only be able to sell those two services.
I hope this clarifies the seriousness of this concern.

as an aside i'd probably sign up with slammer communications, but never in a million years would i sign up with teedawg wireless. haha nice one slammer
First and foremost, you agreed to make a commitment to either carrier just for the iPhone(GSM). This normally wouldn't be an issue. The iPhone is a great phone. However this leads me to the second issue.
The other two major choices in Tampa Bay, are VZW and Sprint. Both these carriers have scored the highest ratings in that area.
This is the fault of your post. You would rather see competition whither away based on your passion for one phone. You based your opinion on how this merge would improve YOUR coverage and completely disregarded the other two carriers that are suited better for OTHER's interests.

newsflash dawg, at&t pricing is a mirror image of vzw pricing. u serious??
It's pretty close....
But the data plans, and the fact now that if you have unlimited text, you can pretty much put yourself on the cheapest minute plan, did actually help me out a lot.
I understand your point, but I figured the reason they did it was to try to get more people on the texting plan. I'm willing to bet that a large percentage of their customer base is already on low minute plans anyway.
Back to the point of the OP though. I'd be all for the merger as long as the FCC mandates some type of regulation forcing AT&T to keep their promise about covering rural areas with 4G.
I know that monopolies are bad for the customer, but people seem to forget about the negatives that occur when a large company gets broken up. I lived in a rural area of the country for over half my life, and ...

Monopolies are bad, but local providers can be just as bad if not worse.
You do know there's a middle ground, right? It's where we are right now.

I know, I'm addressing the two extremes that has been posted all over the board here.
Actually it IS Sprint's business. Quite literally. And how is CDMA slower again? Last I checked there were like 5 phones that take advantage of any so called speed increase over CDMA. Oh and good luck using it. You probably get EDGE more often than 3G.
And I'm not even going to debate with someone who thinks the iPhone is the best phone out there.
