AT&T...

did something similar when ATTWS was for sale and Vodaphone flirted with purchasing that entity. Cingular's parents jumped in and offered a large sum to close the sale. It made sense for them then and it does now. I hate it though. This can not be good for consumers.

Azeron,
I don't think any major merger like this is healthy for the consumer and I am an AT&T customer and honestly, no complaints. (and I don't deny others do have problems). But if it does go through, I hope to hell coverage gets better, and prices don't go crazy. (and not only AT&T's).

Only advantage I do see to this, is if one's traveling, I'm sure some alliance for roaming in europe and US for both TM(EU) and AT&T.

As much as AT&T can be assholes, they have always honored legacy plans. So hope it works out.

How would coverage get better though? Are there an areas you know of where T-Mobile outperforms AT&T? Will they move towers from one locale to another or just increase capacity. I don't know that this is anything more than a customer grab and elimination of an upstart competitor.

Upstart competitor? T-Mobile has been hemorrhaging money and customers for years....this is less a take down then it is a mercy killing.

As much as people like to talk about 'the big 4' the real truth is that there was only ever a big 2, and two also rans that were slowly bleeding to death.

As for Sprint being an "Also Ran"... I will admit between the mistake that was the Nextel merger and December 2007 when Dan Hesse came on board that what you spoke of was true. Sprint went from being an inovator (First 2G network, First 3G network, First EVDO release) to being faceless corporation that cared more about making money and getting customers then it cared about keeping them. During that time it didn't matter if we had 3 to 5 percent churn as long as we had massive gross adds.

December 2007, Gary Forsee gets shown the door, Dan Hesse gets brought in. Twelve quarters later we have won J.D. Powers and Associates Customer service awards, we shown net adds for the first time in a long time and we are showing profits again. We are ...

In places where ATT has only 850mhz it will get to keep most if not all of Tmob's 1900mhz. So that can give them better coverage. I think the real grab for power was over the 1700 spectrum. ATT would have looked like a joke only launching its own native 700 LTE. I think that's the real reason ATT has been waiting to launch LTE.
It will be interesting for sure to see what happens when they flip the switch.

I think that's a thing of the past. Cellular One and any former AT&T Wireless and certain legacy Cingular customers have been notified they must get a new phone and pick a current rate plan or their service will be disconnected.

I have an AT&T Wireless plan (from around the time Cingular/Vodafone were bidding for it) that works well for me. I just received notification that my service will be disconnected on May 15 if I don't pick up new phones (SIM cards) and pick a current plan.

Some of those legacy plans are actually money losers for at&t....it really does them no good to try to keep customers who are actually paying less than it costs to offer the service....

I have a friend who works for AT&T (not sure which area) and he told me they're doing a 100% consolidation, so only SIM cards on the current system don't need to be replaced. I can understand that from a technical standpoint, but I'll sure miss my plan once I switch out (leaving the carrier after 9 years.)
