Actually, DoCoMo uses UMTS, otherwise known as Wideband CDMA, or WCDMA, which bears little to no relation to CDMA as Sprint and Verizon use it. W-CDMA is the ultimate 3G evolution of GSM networks, beginning with GSM/GPRS, continue with EDGE, and culminating with W-CDMA. Some European carriers are simply going straight from GSM to W-CDMA and not deploying EDGE, though. AT&T Wireless is currently deploying W-CDMA (UMTS) tests in 4 US markets and will begin evaluation of handsets shortly. Look for full trials in 4 cities before EOY 2004....
