I work a job that anyone with a GED can get, I am paying on a new car, live in one of the nicer apartments in my city, invest 4% into 401k and 2% into stock, pay my bills and still have enough left over to keep up on new gadgets and go out and have a good time when I want to.

Cellphones are not a necessity, communication is. Landlines are affordable and any cell phone, active or not, as long as it can power on and function will call 911.

When I was in Holland the tax rate was darn near 40% for the locals in middle class. Thank God I was getting tax free since I was deployed. I bought most of the beer for people I met when I was there, to say the least.

Perhaps straw man? Living within my means is difficult, but you won't see me depending upon credit cards, loans or flat out not pay my bills. I have adjusted my lifestyle accordingly.

None of those statements are directed at you, though they are commonly worded in a way that might seem like it is, my fault. Let me expand.
Living within your means goes for anyone, the "your" being inclusive to the person at the time. I didn't post it as a question, but as a statement that "living within ones means" can be difficult for a nation that has become addicted to credit. Maybe the statement made in quotations is a better way for you to understand that it is not inclusive to you but Americans in general.
