Services like these are just horrible.
I never understood how a third party could simple attach themselves to your bill.

uh yeah thats not entirely true. Ive received text from third partys that at the end of the text(that i don't read) it says if you don't want this service reply stop. So if you don't reply stop for a service you never signed up for they just start charging you? Its b.s.

While I see your point...why not just read the message. I mean it won't charge you any extra to read it, and if you don't have an unlimited plan it already cost you 1 text. The most it will cost you to stop the subscription is $.20 by most carrier's standard pay per use rates.

Right but when i get a text from a 1800 number and it say you can get free ringtones, I didn't used to read those i would automatically just delete them. I shouldnt have to read those texts. After 2 months of having a 9.99 charge on my account i contacted my provider and they told me they couldn't do anything about this charge because i signed up for it...when i didn't. Now i read those text and now my carrier provides blocks but a year ago it wasn't the same story. It was just flat out stealing with me in my scenario.

I'll repeat, I'm not gonna argue with you, I don't think it should be our responsiblity to be scrutinizing each and every unknown text in hopes there is not a $9.99 charge attached to it. That being said, wouldn't you rather waste an extra minute of your day reading and replying than being shafted with the $9.99 charge? Jus' sayin'

One of the people in this conversation are paying to be a customer, the other person in this conversation is being paid to help the customer...

I too am a customer. I do not reply to any of these threads in any way, shape, or form in hopes to defend AT&T or my position as a rep. If I actually liked AT&T and it's policies, I'd already have their service. My end of the conversation is as a customer whom does not have time to waste with customer service on the phone because I know how most of us work and how long it takes to get anyone on the phone.

These services need to be opt-in instead of opt-out. They need to be completely blocked by default unless requested- like having international roaming enabled on a phone.

i agree with you. however, after you have been active a specific (something like 120 days or close to it)amount of time, basic international calling features are provisioned on att customer's lines.

but as a customer service rep i do find that extremely annoying having to repeatedly tell customers to tell their kids to stop texting those short codes for "free" ringtones during commercial breaks on the jersey shore.

Is that where all those charges the custies are always beaching about are coming from? 😲 "Mr/Mrs Custie, it's Snookie's fault your bill is so high." 🤣

Or on some social networks like MYSpace. "To find who has a crush on you enter your cell phone number" and very small fine print that no body reads says a monthly charge of $9.99 will be added to your Cell Phone Bill.

I see this at least once a day and sometimes every month from the same people. I advise them to text stop using the offending phone and tell them I can block Premium messaging content but they refuse. they are in next month same problem.
Worse they always want a credit.

Wirelss providers do allow you to add what is called purchae blocker to your accout.
When this is added and a outside or 3rd party is trying to add a charge to your account a sms is sent to your line and you are instructed to enter a pin number to accept or deny the charge being added to the account.

Well...yes and no. I'll give you an example. I've had 5 active lines on T-Mo for over 6 years now and the ONLY times I've ever had an anonymous third party subscription added to any of my lines is when one of us stupidly provided our number to any other "free" short code provider which in turn somehow forwarded my number to another service. Granted, I did not ask for such secondary service, but I did however initiate some sort of communication. I truly believe this is the case each and every time the customer SWEARS they've never even HEARD of short codes. (scene cut to them texting in for their favorite idol) 🙄
