There are problems with this idea...
First and foremost, while there is a cost savings in purchasing power, there is a huge cost period in supporting so many varied networks. GSM, EDGE, HSPA, CDMA2000, EVDO Rev. A, WiMax, iDen (thought hat is going away shortly, the cost of converting its customer base must be added in) and potential LTE is just mind boggling. Raising the process more, will play into the hands of the larger two.
As a consumer, I shop for the best bargain that does the most while meeting my needs. I don't require massive coverage. My carrier fits this requirement while saving me dollars.
Other consumers that look at the same perspective, will take a look at dollars vs coverage. If a carrier has less coverage but costs almost the same as one that has much more, which one would you sign with?
As it stands, I'm not about to pay 20 to 30 dollars more a month per line for cove...

Hilarious yet ridiculous. You are trying to ensure that there are only two carriers left, aren't you? If Sprint and T-Mobile raise their prices without justifying it in something which can be measured they will lose HALF their customer base. The other half would be too stubborn to leave.
