Should we wait?

All of these updates sound great but begs the question if we should just wait until the end of the year to buy a Windows Phone.

If you get one now, you might regret it because of the possibility of hardware and OS improvements leaving us in the dust without support. Probably not but it's happened with every other mobile OS.

No, they were very clear that all of these features are coming to ALL Windows Phones.

We're still in the first generation of hardware, and it's a high-end spec, so it's too early in the lifecycle of the OS for the hardware to be fragmented like that.

Well, yes and no. Not necessarily exactly the same time. Carriers do still have a say in the process; they must approve a major update (same deal with an Apple iOS update, actually.) Apple does a good job of making everyone think they're in control, but Microsoft isn't going to let an update be delayed if one carrier drags their feet on testing.

Microsoft has actually done a good job of making sure that the hardware across Windows Phone7 devices is consistent, what this means is that once a new update is ready, it will be ready for ALL Windows Phones....there won't need to be additional testing for compatibility with one manufacturer or another.
