I've had the MDA since the day it came out.. (I work for TMO,) and while the screen looks pretty bad with the brightness down.. it can be turned up very easily. Go into settings>system>backlight. Voila! It gets bright enough to counteract most direct sunlight. As far as reception goes. Just flash a QTEK radio rom to it. I now have a phone with strong enough signal to make my computer speakers buzz from across the room. AS far as setting MP# and WMA ringtones.. the easy way to do it is to tap and hold on the music file until you get a dropdown menu. One of the first options you see it "Set as Ringtone." Done! My only problem is that the windows platform is not friendly enough. Granted.. I have no problem using it.. I'm a total phone...

BTW - P910a (w/850mhz) or Nokia N70 or equivalent is what I'm after. If anyone is interested in a trade.. let me know. I'd gladly pay a difference.

I also work for TMO and have the MDA, very robust for features and customization options. I also highly suggest Nokia's symbian phones!

Does that mean you'll be editing your in-depth review of the device to relfect the fact that you can now see that it can be adjusted? 🙂

As far as moving to another platform goes, you really have to ask yourself one question: how important is correct synchronization and data translation to you?

If you're a power user of Outlook and have all your contacts categorized and are using some of the extra fields (beyond just name, address, home and cell number, in other words), and have appointments that have integrated contact data in them, and stuff like that, you'll be very disappointed in what the Sony/Ericsson and Nokia synchronization packages do to your data (unless either of them have made good on their threats to start using Microsoft's ActiveSync).

If you're only using the Contacts and Calendar functions in their basic forms and aren't really using all the cool thing...

See.. thats one of the things I HATE about the MDA. I don't want my contacts to be sorted like Outlook sorts them. I want them to be sorted like they are on a phone--IE: Bob Smith 555-5555 ... not Smith, Bob (h)555-5555. The windows platform is just too convoluted. You have to take three to four steps to perform operations that only take 1 or 2 steps on symbian.. or on regular phones. I'm not too worried about sync functions.. as long as it pulls the name and number.

How do you "flash the Qtek rom"? I'm relatively savvy when it comes to gadget stuff, but I'm not a hacker -- is there any easy way to find/download/install this? And will it void my warranty?

Please help, I'm lonely and scared.

Generally speaking, if this is not something you are able and comfortable with doing by yourself, it's highly advisable that you not do it at all. And yes, it will void your warranty. The moment you bring it back in to a shop to get it "fixed" and they see the new flashed ROM on it, they have every right to tell you "Sorry, Charlie." Maybe they'll be nice and help you anyway, but it's pretty unlikely.

I tend to be a bit conservative and somewhat of a purist when it comes to stuff like this, but in general I would prefer a supported/warrantied device that is a little buggy than an unsupported/non-warrantied one that "seems to work for the time being."

Well frankly.. it's pretty hard to mess up a flash. But as WinHack said... if you're not 100% confident it'll work.. don't do it. The first time I was in the middle of a flash, my computer froze and I thought my MDA was a brick that I had just paid $200 for! 😲 Luckily, there is a special bootloader mode that allowed me to flash it with something called an RUU. The only reason I went into it so bold is that I work for T-Mobile and knew i could get a replacement. 😉
