Hands-On: Kyocera Echo
Interesting
I wouldn't fault Sprint for having an event for this phone, either. I heard some other journalists (okay, just Peter Ha from The Daily) complaining that they didn't want to go because the news was leaked in the WSJ. But this is definitely a phone you'd have to see and hold in your hands to cover properly.
The key is the number of apps that support the feature. They don't need many, just the most important few that people will want to run simultaneously. The SDK is a throw-away. They will not sell enough phones to make the SDK enticing to developers. But as l...

1.) Longevity
This device will serve a very small mobile user segment in my opinion. Dual screens sounds cool but for now its merely a feature. I think customer have spoken already that they don't want tricky phones. They don't seem to sell well. I don't feel this device will last long.
2.) Mixed Messages
Sprint is heavily touting its Wimax as next big thing yet they are releasing Flagship phones that run on 3G? I know some of you will say Verizon just released an IPhone that runs on 3G but the IPhone is a proven flagship phone unlike todays announcement.

This phone would have sold well 2 years ago based on the type of market out there.
Other phones from different manufacturers and different carries have tried to break the mold and failed.
Good luck to Kyocera but I think they were better making a stellar Wimax phone with some unique features...Not form factor.
I can't help but think that if it were another manufacturer that came out with this, that nay sayers would be singing a different tune. I applaud Kyocera on this.

The only negative comment I have to say is that its a damn shame this isn't a wimax device. Watvhing videos on this would be pretty damn cool.
Another cool application would be the Amazon Kindle app. You could hold it just like a book.

This would be akin to Yugo making an announcement that they were launching the Worlds Most Luxurious car and expecting the world to stop.
Think Hyundai and Kia, use to be the worlds largest pice of junk, not I would by a Hyundia sonata over Toyota and Honda in a heartbeat. Last place companys can make it to 1st place with alot of work.
Step one complete, they hopefully will continue. I have had more problems with samsung than any other company in the provider I work for, 3:1 samsungs gtting returned to any other phone.
