to keep symbian alive? They have no chance of keeping up with i0S or android or windows phone 7 at this point. They need to cut their losses and join the decade of mobile os

So when Apple announced OS X back in the late 90s, did they simply pull the plug on OS9?

I'm talking about the OS 9 -> OS X transition back in the late 90s.

That was a critical technology shift for Apple. Did Apple simply dump support for OS 9 simply because they were going to OS X?

This point has nothing to do with the iPhone. The point is that strategic technological decisions to adopt something new does not mean that a company immediately drops support for the old.

For this point, who cares if it's a phone or computer or for that matter a car. Point is going from platform A to platform B doesn't mean that everything for platform A automatically ends just because the company decides to switch.

So before I pose the question one more time, let me give you a background of Apple. Apple also does make this thing called a computer. There was a point in time when Apple's primary business was selling computers. Apple used to have an operating system called OS 9 that was getting very old and outdated. Apple announc...

Yes they did otherwise they would have went out of business due to illegaly selling two operating systems at the same time

How would that be even be remotely illegal to sell two OSs? Last time I checked it's not illegal for a company to sell to OSs. Are you referring to a breach of contract? That is different from illegal. I am not aware of any law stating that a company cannot concurrently sell 2 OSs at the same time and I am not familiar with what Apple's licensing scheme used to be. For a period, I do believe the did sell OS 9 and X concurrently.

What is Nokia doing? What is Microsoft doing? You're points are starting to confuse me.

So then should Apple have just given up in 1996/7 when it only had like 180 days of operating cash and were close to bankruptcy? There's countless other companies that have been in the brink come back to life.

You have a strangely myopic vision of the world around you. Quite honestly, I have no clue how Nokia will end up(your guess is as good as mine as I cannot accurately predict the future), but you do seem to have a strange way of going about things.

What was the point of you going around in this strange arc, just to make a simple point? I had a simple point to make as well, but I had follow you on this.

Apple should had given up back then. It would of made things simpler not having to explain to people that the apple computer is a substandard machine.

So does this mean that the whole world should listen and follow what you have to say?

Also, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but you do realize that the only opinion that matters to Apple, Nokia, Microsoft, etc. are those of the shareholders?

Nokia is still the largest handset maker.

It amazes me that people sit in their own little worlds and think that it must be the same in everyone else's.

I think that there is a general understanding of the shortcomings, but before this goes any further, maybe you should consider what you write before you actually write it.

iOS?

Apple hasn't licensed its OS since OS 7(mind you that's for a computer not the iPhone). I don't know what kind of bubble you're living in, but suggesting that a 3rd party company develop an iOS device tends to lessen your credibility.

Could you please at least make some sort of credible statement, if you're going to make one at all?

while i would agree that symbian is complicated i would have to disagree about it being trash, they are very usefull and have a lot of functionalities that you wont get with other handsets or are just getting with newer android devices(u know the small stuff in the alarm,messaging,oraginzers,etc.)...as eric(or another moderator) said before symbian works well even with lesser powered processors, and that is where nokia is loosing, they are loosing in the "wow" factor in spec sheets, people see 1Ghz processors over a 500MHz and they wer told ghz is better they buy it. but again the simplicity of android and especially ios is the key here but lacking hardware wow factors(except the n8's camera~considered as the best camera in a phone) is reall...

We know Nokia has been doing bad lately, but Nokia is still the world's largest mobile phone maker by far, they just don't make phones they also deal with anything that has to do with wireless network ''Nokia Siemens'' which also gives them a lot of profit.

They don't have to switch to no Android or WP7, cause that would be stupid after all the money they have invested on Symbian and Meego.
Just giev them sometime until they get Symbian 4 and Meego straight.
