When is Sprint shutting down Nextel?

They're leased out at least through 2013.

I believe what the CEO said was that they intend to "fully support" the iDEN network through 2013, then start trying to migrate iDEN users over to their CDMA network.

That said, Sprint has reversed and re-reversed themselves so many times on Qchat (CDMA-based PTT) & their intentions with iDEN, no one can realy trust anything the CEO says on the topic.

Still, it's a good bet that iDEN will continue as-is through 2013, then be around for a couple more years after that, because it would take that long to migrate everyone over (assuming "everyone" will migrate from iDEN to CDMA, although I think that's mighty optimistic).

For me, once the iDEN network is no longer available and a switch must be made, it makes more sense to go with Veriz...

...according to Consumer Reports. Sprint beat them in 5 out of 13 American cities, and tied in several others. CR even stated that Verizon is no longer the clear frontrunner.

My advice-- stick with Sprint.
