Selling off its towers would not be a bad move.

Sprint did it and it seems to be working fine for them. T-Mobile is so cash-strapped, and with DT constantly debating a spin-off or sell-off, T-Mobile could sell its towers and pay a 3rd party to maintain them, and focus its energy on improving its data speeds and securing more smartphone options.

T-Mobile is the 3rd largest carrier in the U.S. not the 4th.

Phonescoop lists carriers according to size and as you can see, T-Mobile is 3rd and Sprint is 4th. Remember when AT&T was listed first and Verizon 2nd. They Verizon overtook AT&T and Phonescoop now lists Verizon as 1st.

This is because Phonescoop lists each brand of Spring separately. You have Spring CDMA postpaid, which comes in 4th, and then you have Nextel which comes in 7th, Boost which is 8th, and Virgin which is 9th.

The industry counts these numbers together, thus Sprint is listed as 3rd in the U.S. cellular industry.

My bad. But if we are just counting Sprint and not all the other smaller divisions then T-Mobile would be third and Sprint 4th. That was my point.

Sprint services about 48 to 49 million subscribers under their umbrella, T-mobile just is about 33+ million?

Technically, it is 4th. Sprint's numbers counted together from Spring, Nextel, Virgin Mobile, and Boost Mobile total about 48 million. T-Mobile is around 40 million or so. If you took just Sprint post-paid numbers and exclude the other brands, then T-Mobile would have slightly more.

a carrier selling their towers is jsut a quick fix so they can raise capitol quickly. its not really a long term solution. the long-term expense of renting back your own network cannot be a good cost long term.
