How would you ever upgrade? I guess you could always get a new number from your carrier and start a new line of service. I could easily see problems pulling up accounts though from people not remembering their phone numbers.

Google doesn't become your wireless carrier. So if you port your number to google voice, you can use any phone you want, without worrying about porting your number to a wireless carrier, and use google voice to make and receive calls on your 1 google voice number. If you wanted to cancel your regular account and use a prepaid service, porting can be difficult if not impossible. For example, VZW will let you change a prepay number to postpay, but not the other way around. Porting your number to google voice before cancelling your contract account could be beneficial.

Verizon lets you go from contract to to prepay. I work at verizon and do it all the time for people.

The article says that porting your number to Gvoice cancels your account with your wireless carrier so that's why I'm asking.

whats the process for moving from post pay to prepay with the same phone number?
