Currently running nero v4 w voodoo lag fix from team wiskey on my vibrant idk if its available for the captivate?? Its amazing.Its super fast, gps works, and everything else works its very stable Its 2.2/w 2.3 elements.
Back up your apps using titanium backup from the market there's a free version and a paid version either should work.
Do you currently use clockwork mod recovery? if not then get it. Rom manager is in the market for free There's also a paid version. either will work.
It shouldn't matter if you flash over the rom you currently have or flash back to stock first. Ive re-flashed over custom roms many time and ive never had to flash back to stock.
Just use the kernel that comes with the rom unless you've done research and make sure the kernel you want to flash is compatable the rom you want to flash a lot of times their not.
id also recomend doing your reserch on xda-developers in the forums.
