Updates not a core part of their business model

Android phone manufacturers have little incentive to update their software - their business model is based on selling hardware.

New apps not able to run on your old OS version? Samsung could not care less since it gets no cut of Market sales.

It should be no surprise that updates have not been a priority. Samsung's focus is on new devices - look at CES - and they are not responsible to consumers or developers to upgrade the software on existing devices.

This is the nature of Android itself: Google has no say in these updates except for its own Nexus devices.

tl;dr Don't hate the player, hate the game.

This wouldnt be an issue if Samsung didnt want to update their phones to Froyo or Gingerbread, so the problem is they have on multiple times claimed they would update their phones, sell them to people who believed them, and then NEVER update them and drop the bomb that they wont support updates. This is a problem that could be resolved if they stop putting their ****ty TouchWiz which is worse then MotoBlur on their phones. They should allow people to turn off TouchWiz and have stock Android if they dont want to update, so then we CAN update if we chose.

How is Touchwiz bad? Its just a user interface. Doesn't eat up battery and all the other Galaxy S devices using touchwiz around the world and many regional carriers here in the U.S. have Froyo. So don't blame Touchwiz when you have no idea what you are talking about.

The problem lays with the big 4 carriers. They don't want the Galaxy S to be bigger and better than their top phones.(G2,Evo,Droid X, iPhone).

Android is different than BB/iOS.

With BB and iOS, any App sales or good/bad press is directed at the OS company. They control all the phones with that OS.

With Android, Google makes the OS but it's up to the phone manufacturer to do the updates.

It's sill to expect lightning fast response time to something that's basically lost money for the manufacturer.

Sure, they don't want bad press BUT this is a new paradigm where phones are expected to get upgrades vs past market experience that you get what you bought on day 1 (with maybe minor updates).

I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense. If their goal is to sell more hardward than surely providing bad customer service by failing to fix known problems won't exactly inspire people to make their next phone a Samsung. Surely being responsive to customer needs and fixing known problems ASAP is more likely to create customer loyalty.

Maybe you mean only that since their business model isn't based on software that they don't know how to handle software updates, that might be correct. But if you mean that they are intentionally being incompetent as part of a strategy to encourage people to buy more Samsung hardware, as I said I don't think that strategy makes business sense. No company has ever become profitable by deliberately offering ...

We don't hate the player or the game. We hate being played.
