People Spoke, Sprint Listened

Am I happy about this change? Nope, this is going to be a pain in the ass to explain and to try and reason with already unreasonable customers who think they're paying too much for what they feel entitled to for free.

Here's the thing; I get about 6-10 complaints a week, at least, about how "I don't live in a 4G area, how dare you charge me for it/no one else has to pay premium data, if I'm charged, everyone with a smartphone should too!"

Guess what? We listened.

Now all smartphone users have to pay the premium so we can keep the unlimited data as just that; unlimited.

But hey, raise enough of a fuss and throw enough of a hissyfit and we'll go Verizon's route and cap the data for you and you'll stay at the prices you have now.

at least for smartphones. It more than likely WILL be capped for 4g, but as that pricing is not available yet, it's kinda useless to speculate on it.

Verizon smartphone data is UNLIMITED. You're free to rant if you wish, but please stop forwarding false information.

To add to Menno's point, I'll add a personal note.

I work for Verizon, and I know the plans very well. I won't spend too much time on the fact that smartphone data is neither capped nor limited on Verizon. But I will take a moment to point out the curiousness that I - a Verizon employee - know just about as much about my competition's plans as I do my own, while my competitors continuously misunderstand (or misrepresent) Verizon plans, phones, and coverage.

It's time to stop misinformation. If you're in the business, know the business, please.

Period. When a change occurs we can speak to it then. Believe me as much as I despise these *Bleepards* I make it a point to stream as much as I can. I am daring them to *Bleep* with my plan.

you are correct when you say that verizon does not cap the data. however you will be paying alot more for verizon then you will for sprint.
for verizon you pay $89.99 for unlimited talk and text plus a extra $29.99 for unlimited data for a total of $119.98.
for sprint you get unlimited data, text and mobile to mobile with 450 landline [i.e. non mobile calls] for only $69.99 plus $10.00 for smartphones, for a total of $79.99.
you save $39.99 by bieng with sprint.

You're comparing totally UNLIMITED talking with unlimited mobile to mobile

This is stupid. Period.

Not only is it not totally unlimited here, but it's also the fact that Mobile to Mobile DOES NOT COUNT if you are roaming, which can be a signifigant amount if you travel.

Verizon's comparable 450 plan is 89.99. For sprint, this is 79.99. It's STILL 10 a month cheaper.

If you present it this way, THEN you can point out that Sprint's 450 includes unlimited mobile to mobile on any network.

Positioning it the way you do is not only sleazy, but it's downright wrong.

If you can't spend the time to learn about the competition, don't bother talking about it.

I prefer my $89.99 1400 family share with Friends and Family and the Google Voice combo. GV + FF = Effectively Unlimited.

That works too.

So Google voice is still unlimited then? I know they changed how they worked call forwarding a bit ago (on google's end) so people weren't sure if it would continue being effectively unlimited or not.

It's a little disingenuous but I dont think I'd call it stupid. For a lot of people, myself included, having unlimited mobile to mobile on any network is, in effect, unlimited calling. The only person I talk to on a land line is my mom. And I dont spend 450 mintues a month before seven pm doing it.

Sprint's pricing model saves me thirty whatever dollars a month. Which is not chump change.

I have a major beef regardless. I have been a long time subscriber. Premier customer you will.

Families are the ones hit hard here. I have a family plan of 5 lines plus aircard. Because my wife and I have 4G phones and 1 has a smartphone, I must pay across the board data charges even on dumb phones. If I'm correct, this rate hike will force me to pay an extra 10 dollars on the next two dumb phones. I have a huge problem with this. I would be more forgiving of this rate hike, if they would eliminate the data charge for dumb phones or texting phones. I do not allow my young niece or nephew access to internet and it is blocked. Why pay for it?

This hike is unacceptable in this case. If they allowed tailoring of the family plans, I w...

Yes it does. Try buying a blackberry and say the incognito. BOTH are charged 20 dollars for data under the family plan. Unless Sprint has changed their policy. You can't buy one smartphone with mandatory data charge and have the other phone escape the charge. Even of it is a dumb phone. I fear this new hike, will mirror the current.

The 10$ a month is per line, not per account x lines.

So an account with 5 lines, two of which are smart phones, will pay an extra $20 a month.

An account with 5 lines and no smart phones will pay $0 extra a month.

Also, *YOU WILL NOT PAY THIS RIGHT NOW*.

Unless you plan on going in and upgrading after January 30th to a smart device, you will be grandfathered in with a $0 SOC code to each line that has a smart phone, this code will not change with plan changes or warranty issues.

If you want to avoid the big bad charge for a bit, the best thing to do is upgrade now to a smart device you can use for quite a while, or prep to jump ship.

Thanks! My wife and I have already upgraded. She has the Epic and I have the Evo. This means we will not be effected either way. My Son just upgraded to the Zio. So he is set for awhile(If he doesn't break it). The problem I have, is when we added two dumb phones to the plan, they said it would be 20 dollars per line because the other lines were smartphones. I didn't and still don't believe I should have to pay 20 dollars each on two lines that have no data access. This means I was paying the same on dumb phones as smartphones. While this new charge distinguishes the difference of a smartphone and dumb phone, the principle lays within my original complaint. I had no data access on two lines, yet Sprint was making money on these two lines.

Even though the two phones are not smart phones, they *do* have internet access included in the 19.99 you are paying a month, same as text.

That's why add-a-lines on Everything Data plans are more than on Everything Messaging plans, or voice only plans.

but we have no idea what those plans will be, if they'll come to pass, or what Sprint/clear will do in the future for that matter.

until the plans are known, it's kind of usless to speculate, much less use them to position your own products/services.

For one or two instances of a CEO chatting flippantly, I can find three or four press conferences where that same CEO specifically stated there has been no decision made yet.

Just the mere talk of it is scary. It is the beginning of grooming the consumers and leaves the door open for reality. Historically, all industries have operated this way.

I shiver at the slightest hints of changes amongst carriers. It usually requires me to brandish my wallet.

Well how about you listen to this.

1. I am a customer with a contract, if I feel the need to swap from one smartphone to another - I shouldnt have to pay a fee for doing so, because EITHER smartphone I use will use the same amount of data that Ive used for years. Changing my phone doesnt require a new contract, but I do believe charging me more to use said phone is a monetary change to my contract, and I want out of said contract.

2. The fee should have been for 4G only. It started off with 4G phones and Sprint listed off HARDWARE features not actual NETWORK DATA features as the reason for the $10 fee. Instead of charging EVERYONE, Sprint should have only charged people who WANT to access 4G. Oh, they couldnt do that because there isnt...

They're not charging you unless you change hardware.

You can change the plan all you want, but if you change hardware, even if bought off eBay, they will add the monthly charge.

If you want the latest and greatest, you will pay a fee, which isn't exactly the worst thing ever. People have been doing it since last year (buying an EVO in a 3G only area).

While I'm 100% what you mean by you want your contract fulfilled, i can only speculate that you are saying that you want it to feel as though it's getting everything it wants out of your relationship with it.
My wife left me for the local braille translator since she found our relationship "unfulfilling". I dearly hope the same fate does not befall you and your contract.

If you mean you want your contract terms forgotten since you did sign a contract that provides for reasonable changes by your carrier, and got a phone at a subsidized price, then good luck, Bucko.
ALL your contract is, is you saying "Hey, Sprint! Tell you what - you give me a few Benji's off the retail cost of the phone and I'll stick around for a couple years! That ...

Posts like this make me feel getting down on my knees and thanking God that I no longer work in the wireless industry.

Over the years, I was subjected to many, many, many customer tirades like this one, and obligated to try to be 'nice' even when they heaped on personal abuse.

If you call customer service and talk like this, I feel sorry for the agent you have to speak to.
