Could this be in preparation for announcement of a new smartphone for Sprint?

More like a sheep tax. Look at all of the people stating they NEED the phone selection that comes along with paying at minimum $20 more per month for service.
What do you need to do that you can't on the LG Optimus series? My guess would be nothing. As long as people feel the need to show off the carriers will take advantage.

1) Video chat
2) Run the latest OS version
...
2.2 is fine.
You really NEED video chat? ๐คฃ
Used it on the EVO on WiMax...it sucks!
...
Yes. I would love to have video chat so I can see my lady.
...
instead of phone sex calls, video sex calls ๐

Too bad Video Calling doesnt work. There are at least half a dozen video calling programs out there, and NONE of them actually work.
Saying there is video calling on an EVO is like saying a Porsche can do 150mph - sure it might be able to, but not very well and not for very long before it fails.

Did you take a time machine from 1970 or something? Porsches not only go 150 mph now, but they can do it all night long. Just sayin'...

That's because you used on the EVO on WiMax. It barely works. The iPhone's works superbly, even on Skype + 3G.
...
on WiFi, iPhone works great, tried Fring, and it kept crashing when it first released. Want to try Skype soon though and test it out on 3G.
...
Fring is really crap. Try Skype though. The quality is almost as good as Facetime over 3G and has been consistent.
...
You're funny. The i-Phone only uses wi-fi for video calls. At least the EVO gives you the option.
That said, it's a dumb feature.
...
It's a GREAT feature! ๐คค
...
No, the iPhone 4 can make video calls over 3G with Skype. Real Skype. The one everyone has. Not the crappy QIK/Fring crap.)
(The iPhone 4 can do it with Fring too, which the EVO can use, but Fring is crap.)

optimus falls under this $10 hike

Not the Optimus M ๐

This is like a nightmare. I like Sprint and T-Mobile because they are the underdogs. Suddenly Sprint has gotten some huge *Bleeping* cajones! Something MUST be up. This February 7 announcement HAS to be the Wi-Max iphone, right?
...
if it is, I'll eat my hat.
...
Lets get the sPhone rumors going again! ๐
...
Nah... Verizon has paid out the *&% for the iPhone. Apple is a greedy company, but they aren't blind-greedy. Launching n iPhone on all the major carriers turn their exclusive feeling device, the ICON of wireless, into just another smartphone offering. They want the status that being an Apple product brings.
No matter how one feels about the device, Apple, cost, and other offerings out there, the iPhone does dictate to the market while all others react to the market. This point of strength only exists if it sets a high platform. Offering the iPhone on multiple carriers domestically detracts from that.
...
And yet in Europe two or three carriers offer the iphone per nation.
...
I'm thinking if I'M greedy, I want the most opportunity to sell my device. Since I'm already making a CDMA iPhone, why don't I sell it to Sprint AND Verizon?!?!? More people to buy it! I obviously don't care if your network can handle it, I sold it to AT&T.
...
Because the fewer carriers the more favorable terms they can get from the carriers they do work with. Their agreement with at&t is famously ridiculous in its demands, including a portion of the recurring monthly charges of every iPhone user, if the iPhone is available on every network they can't get that kind of deal.
...
Well, I doubt they are getting any such deal from Verizon either. Verizon doesnt need iPhone. Still the number one carrier without it. Verizon turned them down because Apple didn't want to meet Verizon's demands (changebale battery, logo on phone). My guess Verizon had more money and more users.
...
Incorrect. Verizon CEO stated they went after the Iphone but Apple wanted to create the phone for GSM technology first due to International use. There was a new post somewhere (phoenscoop or phonearena) stating this.
...
In either case, Verizon doesn't need the iPhone. They don't have to make any special deals or bend to the demands of Apple.
...
But look at all the policy changes that have already occurred post announcement....the evidence strongly indicates that VZW did indeed bend to Apple's wishes...
Remember, in Apple's view, Apple doesn't have 'partners' they have servants, every agreement they have with every other company essentially amounts to 'bitch, bend over and take it like a man' I doubt that VZW got off any easier.
This is about the nature of Apple, and Apple doesn't play well with others
...
I do think that changes came about because of Apple, but not because they demanded it. When AT&T exclusively had the iPhone, I think Verizon introduced NE2 and annual upgrade to intice customers to stay and not chase the iPhone. Now that Verizon has the iPhone, no need to keep those precautions in place.
...
It's not just the post I'm replying to, I've seen it in several forums. Verizon did NOT introduce new every two credit to compete with the iPhone. NE2 credit is a ten year old program. The iPhone was released in 2007.
...
That's fine. It's just that now Verizon has the iPhone, they don't have to worry about churn as much.
...
Verizon paid nothing for the Iphone.
Mark my words....to compete with the incredible market share that Android has, and is increasing exponentially each quarter, then they have to release the Iphone on all carriers. Period.
The announcement concerning Feb. 7th stated "Making the ipossible possible" and "an industry first."
Good betting money points to the possibility of an Iphone 4 with 4G.......
...
If youre thinking iphone... Verizon has a multiyear exclusivtivity on cdma version only in the US with apple... so sprint will definitly not be carrying it anytime soon
...
๐ ๐ ๐
Really??? So what does that have to do with a Wi-Max version?

A wimax only phone would be suicide for them right now. Wimax radio's are still too large (it would require a total redesign, which apple might not be fond of) and Wimax is a horrible battery hog with current tech.
Then you have the issue of coverage. Where wimax works, it's great. but it's been 20 miles south of me for going on 8 months now. No movement. Selling a wimax only device right now would piss off a lot of customers because it simply wouldn't work. Sure, there is CDMA/Wimax hybrids, but 1) I highly doubt Verizon didn't block this idea when they signed with Apple, at least short term. 2) it would require a total redesign of the device, which apple wouldn't approve of.
...
i disagree. I believe that it is likely a Wi-Max/CDMA iphone. Verizon did not pay apple to lock Sprint out. Apple freed the iphone.
...
Wimax is only for data. ๐คจ Wimax devices still use CDMA for talking and 3G data. A Wimax only device would be next to worthless right now, until sprint and clear blanket the country with Wimax, which still can't penetrate buildings well. When Di you think that will happen?
...
11:23 a.m.: (from Maggie Reardon) Will the CDMA iPhone be exclusive to the Verizon network?
Cook says it's a multiyear deal with Verizon but it's not exclusive. He won't comment on any other details of the deal.

This could just mean that Verizon MVNO carriers can get it (after 6 months-12 months) on their networks.
You can bet that the discussion between apple and Verizon has something in there about sprint or T-mobile getting it.

No exclusivity.....sorry there bud. ๐คฃ
