Verizon Wireless Officially Ending 'New Every Two' Upgrades

At least I get a new phone every year with my plan!

Me too! And I can talk to more people for free in more places! And I have internet whenever and whereever I need it! What good is a new phone if the network it is on doesn't work the way it is supposed to everywhere? It's great to have new tech, no doubt, but I want to USE mine.

Verizon has the larger mobile to mobile network, but any Sprint plan with data gives you unlimited calling to any network.

Also, Verizon's early annual upgrade is only for the first line, whereas Sprint gives you a discounted annual upgrade for all additional lines, on top of a FULL upgrade for the first line.

And as far as LTE networks, neither carriers have good coverage anywhere. Let that play out.

I didn't say talk anywhere. New tech really has nothing to do with talking on your phone. The statement was about getting a new phone every month, which if all you want to do is talk, Sprint will be fine. Get a basic feature phone every year. But, to me, the purpose to getting a new phone every year is to have the latest and greatest. So, right now, Sprint has the 2 best phones, EVO and Epic. If you own one of those phones and are not in a 4G market, you still pay $10/month for "premium" data even though you don't get premium data. And, if you travel outside of major cities, you don't get ANY data. I may not get a yearly upgrade on a 2 year contract, but there is no "premium" data charge on a 4G usb and I can get Unlimited Data on my Android...

Better network then sprint hands down, better customer service, better phones.

I have both the Evo 4g from sprint and the Mytouch 4g from T-mobile so i know both ends of the spectrum. ive also had the Droid from verizon and verizon can......... yea lets leave them out of this.

T-Mobile's new HSPA+ network blows Sprints WiMax out the water in so many ways its acually sad.... I can be in the same room same time of day and i can only watch a video on wi-fi with the Evo. The network is baaad.

Plus i pay for the 4g data on it and even when im in philly the "4g" is below speeds..... REALLY?!?!?

I have more to say but ill just leave it like that for now.

Why don't you get any data? This doesn't make sense. Sprint has large Roaming agreements with US Cellular and Verizon. Are you sure your roaming has been enabled?? I travel to very small rural (farm) areas quite often and my Samsung Epic Gets roaming signal and data just fine.

Not to mention the fact that the 10 dollar add on for having a 4g device is STILL LESS THAN Verizon's data plans 😉

What good is an annual upgrade if you don't need a new phone?

I know customers are accustomed to thinking that the carrier is being really nice by giving you a new phone, but they aren't. It is true carriers, all carriers, lose money on the sale of every phone, it is even true that if you are clever you will never need to pay for a phone because you can always manipulate the system to get any phone you want free, but the carrier doesn't do this out of the goodness of their own hearts, they do it for the contract.

Annual upgrade = never being out of contract

Sign a two year service contract and renew after one year...do you really think that is beneficial for the consumer?

Its the option of having it which is good, for instance if I destroy my phone now I can easily get a full upgrade if I wanted to...

But you know who the 'annual upgrade' really appeals to? Vanity upgraders...people who want 'the latest and greatest' just because it's the latest and greatest....or who the follow the trends and want whatever is the 'coolest', and frankly I have no need for that. If I need a new phone and am not eligible for an upgrade I'll just go to EBay, and I don't feel any need to upgrade just because I can.....I stuck with my Blackberry Curve for years after it became totally obsolete and only upgraded because the trackball broke and it became unusable.

I can't really say anything about the coverage issue because coverage is very much a local issue, I always get annoyed when people talk about how great Verizon's network is, but where I am, it is...

Well, fortunately for me, I don't destroy phones. I was raised to take care of what I have.

I do to have had the same phone for 2 half years perfectly content with it but there are things in life called accidents!

Spiderman would never have an accident he has his spidersense to rely on and will use his spideyweb to catch or protect his phone from harms way should an accident ever arise. 🤣

I live in a place that gives me full access to everything I need. Never drops calls or here static. Sprint works perfectly fine.

And that is something that can't be argued. If it works where you are, great. But I will never complain about Verizon's prices because I get what I pay for, everywhere.

Sprint, Verizon, att, and tmobile do not have 4g everywhere so someone is getting shafted on all 4 carriers if you look at it that way.

Tmobile has more edge than anything else most people never get hspa+ let alone the H to show up. What good does a 4g network do you when you can't even tell when your connected. Its like an illusion and tmobile is using a magic trick to make you believe you have 4g. Sprint and Verizon have indicators to show you that you are connected to 4g so when you run a speedtest you can see the range of speed you get on 4g. There is no way to accurately test this on tmobile or att because they only have a H or 3g indicator. 🙄

even with the 10 premium data plan, UMMM Sprint is still about 20$ cheaper a month compared to a identical plan to Verizon, that comes down to hmmm 20 x 20 months = 400$ cheaper per your new 20 month hold. and if u don't have the premium data plan ur savings well you can figure that out.

More people I can call and text for free, more coverage everywhere so I can talk and surf the web in more places and once 4G is everywhere, Verizon will give me better building penetration since it owns the lowest frequency. I agree. Some people actually comprehend the VALUE of premium service. Sprint is NOT premium service. In fact, they remind me a lot of T-Mobile when they used to practically give everything away back in the Catherine Zeta Jones day until they restructured their plans to be a bit more realistic. Sprint - the poor-mans network these days. You get what you pay for just like anything else in life. I have a feeling those that argue the "value" of Sprint haven't really tried anything else. JMO

can i ask u a question? lets say u have a smart phone, and u pay 30 dollars for data. I would consider that a premium service, would it be fair at least to throw in GPS and texting unlimited for paying a hefty amount. Sprint does, u get unlimited texting and unlimited data and GPS on there plans where u have to pay extra for those perks on Verizon. your comment just tells me you are just as blinded as i was when i had Verizon.

$30 gets me unlimited data, GPS, and (since it's Android) free navigation. For $10 more I get unlimited text M2M and an additional 500 "in case" I need them, which I average maybe 2 of those a month. So for $40 I get all of that, PLUS a massive network that has been 100% dependable everywhere I have gone - even in the Mountains. Not blind mate - you get what you pay for.

ok so u have free GPS navigation with android, thank google for that, i said identical plans. what if u had a windows device a palm device or a blackberry? not everyone owns or wants android. do the math identical plans with the premium data charge its about 20 bucks more with Verizon. i will admit Verizon does have better coverage in the mountains but ho many times are we there. but anyways the bottom line is go with what works for u, here in NY Sprint makes sense u have identical coverage and data speeds as u do with big red at reduced costs. And as i explained before i had Verizon and for me I am just as happy if not happier now with Sprint.

What point are you trying to make? The statement was that on Sprint, someone gets Unlimited Data, GPS, and Navigation and Unlimited Texts for $30. The reply was that they got the same for $40 and has better coverage. Sounds like both people are happy and find value in what they are getting for they're money.

yeah but u forget that Sprint has agreements with Verizon to Roam 100% on there networm when needed. So where ever u get service with Verizon u get with Sprint. Your answer is a typical Verizon response. Oh we got the coverage so we can pay the extra money, Wrong you don't. And i am proof of it being an EX Verizon customer with the same mentality as yours.

That's not at all accurate. I have been in many locations with buddies on Sprint that have no coverage when I have it. IF they get coverage, there is no data. Roaming agreements don't allow 100% identical coverage or their would be no point in having multiple carriers.

And I have been in a ton of locations where verizon does not have signal but my Sprint phone does. Your point is... 🙄

Seriously? My point? It's not sharing the same exact footprint if two people from two different carriers don't have service at the same time. I figured that was pretty obvious.

The fee is for the data the 4g phones will hog up on 3g or 4g. The iphone had a more expensive data plan then any other phone when it was on att and its still does now on att. 🤣 But nobody complained and they get charged overages for any new customers that pass 2gb of data. I'd much rather pay a measly $10.00 extra and not worry about how much 4g I use they pay $per/mb overage. If you have an Evo or Epic outside a 4g network you still have a badass phone that has video chat over 3g with a front facing camera. Does verizon or att?

Bottom line, if you travel to a 4g covered area you don't have to call Sprint to add it to your plan you can use 4g whenever you want how ever you want as much as you want. Tmobile, verizon, att, and Sprint...

Verizon has unlimited 3G on their phones. And who wants video conferencing on 3G anyway. As I've said many times, I have no regrets, I get what I pay for. Its not about money. I have the most people I can call for free. I have access to some of the best phones and Ill take the Thunderbolt and the Bionic everyday over Evo And Epic. And for the extra money I pay, my company bought the lowest frequency of LTE, so I will also have the most building penetration which means Ill have 4G in more places. Its worth the money to me to have the best. If I wanted to settle for cheap, Id look at Sprint. 🤣

Sprint is far from cheap yes it does cost $100 less than Verizon but that because they are not ripping off there customer base. Yes you get what you pay for and at Sprint you get a whole lot more. Sprint network has test better than verizon in so many locations I cant believe people still believe verizon is better. If they can convince everyone any Android phone is a Droid certainly they will have sheep like you believing the service is better. I have had all 4 and Sprint is just the best all around carrier they all have there Strong point but Sprint has the most.

Better building penetration is true but significant Bandwidth reduction is also true... This sounds like the rerun of the poor folks that happen to have an Iphone in New York... This time I'm willing to bet you (a nickle) that Verizon will have to come out with even more data caps in order to limit the use of the LTE network.. The ThunderBolt is THE EXACT SAME PHONE sans the minor aesthetics it has all the SAME features and capabilities. Of course it also benefits from VZW's restrictions.

Absolutely not true. The cost of the iPhone data plan is the same as the price of any smartphone data plan, and in fact, for the first generation iPhone the cost of the data plan was lower thna for other smartphones, you could get unlimited data+200 text messages for only $20 a month, whereas for other smartphones the data plan cost $30 a month and didn't come with any text messages.

When I went on att website last year I saw a different data plan for the iphone then the other smartphones on att and $25 for 2gb compared to $30 for 5gb is a big difference. $5 dollars more gets u double the data on any other carrier wtf. 😎

None of the articles you posted say that iPhone data plans are more expensive than the data plans for other smartphones.

The first one talks about the new tiered plans, which apply to all smartphones, not just the iPhone.

The second articles compares the iPhone 3G to feature phones, NOT to other smartphones. Unlimited data for feature for a feature phone is $15, for a smartphone (which the iPhone is, as well as Blackberry and Android devices) unlimited data is $30. This article says that the iPhone is more expensive than feature phones, which is true of ALL smartphones.

The third article you posted is a repeat of the first.
