That day when after 3 1/2 yrs, another company carries the iPhone! Though it will look like an iPhone and charge like an iPhone, the experience won't be iPhone. And Verizon looks hypocritical since "Droid does" and "There's a map for that". Ah to relive the days of the Motorola Razr. Have fun, Verizon iPhone users, I'll be calling you and hopefully if you're not on the internet or listening to Pandora or on Facebook, you'll answer!

You realize that you will still be able to answer the phone while you are using the internet right? The radio used for talking takes priority over the one used for internet. What that means is that if you are listening to Pandora and someone calls you then Pandora will stop playing and you can answer, when you end the call it will resume (this is the same as it is on Android phones.) If you are on Facebook and someone calls you then you will not be able to refresh the page while you are talking. It really isn't that big of a deal, especially to any Verizon/Sprint or smaller CDMA carrier's customer as they are already used to this.

BTW Pandora will stop playing on a GSM network while you are on a call too. That's part of the app. It would...

How about every time an email is sent to you while you are on the phone? You'll have to end the call before you can receive that email....

Many apps update in the background and use data while you may be on a call. None of these will update until the call is terminated. While this lack of app functionality may not be a killer for most people, anyone used to receiving or sending email while they're on a call will certainly miss that function, if nothing else.

I have had both AT&T and Verizon. Since AT&T has no 3g service near me, 3g from Verizon takes alot less time to update/sync anyhow. I can see why it would be beneficial for AT&T to work in the background while on a call-- to make up slow speeds while on Edge network. Otherwise, it doesn't matter if I can browse while on a call or not.

Except that you can't talk and surf on Edge, only 3G.

Do you read your emails while you are talking? I don't. Personally I think that would be rude (not trying to call you rude, its just my opinion). If I am talking on the phone then it's an important conversation that can hold my attention. Unimportant conversations I reserve for email or texting, both of which can be done at the same time as internet usage. But, if that is something that is important to you then Verizon or Sprint are definitely not the right carrier for you at this time. As their networks cannot do it.

My main point was that this is a limitation of CDMA technology. Not the phone being crippled.

As for the app updates (unless you meant things like status updates or weather updates). I highly advise against auto-updates...

This is all mute anyway as VZW is already working on adding voice and data dual usage to its CDMA network. Better late than never.

Hmm that's cool. Is this something that will be backwards compatible? Or will it require a new phone? Hopefully it's backwards compatible, otherwise its kinda too late since they will have LTE phones in no time.

From my understanding it's just a matter of VZW upgrading the towers or something. I don't have the article on hand, but I'm sure if you Google it you can find more information about it.

"Why the iPhone is Crippled on Verizon's Network
1:20 PM - January 11, 2011 - By Tuan Nguyen - Source : Tom's Guide US .
Well actually, it's not just the iPhone on Verizon's network, it's any smartphone on Verizon's network.

The problem stems from the fact that Verizon's widespread CDMA network only supports a single session of either voice or data, but not both. This is an issue with any CDMA smartphone, not just the new iPhone.

Indeed, this issue does not exist on AT&T's network, which uses UMTS to handle both voice and data on a single session. AT&T has been touting this advantage over Verizon's network as of late, and with the new iPhone, this weak...

...ever been on a conference call where emails and/or other info are regularly being exchanged? I find this not to be rude, but essential.
If I'm talking to a buddy and get an email from my boss about something critical, you better believe I'll be calling my buddy back back...

I definitely see your point for conference calling. Conference calling is not something that I do on my cell phone so I just over looked that idea. As for the important email thing personally I don't see that as a big deal considering email is not meant as an instant form of communication. If you have long conversations with your friends then I can kind of see that, I don't talk for long periods of time often so again something easy for me to overlook.

I can see your point that it could be inconvenient. There are trade offs with all carriers. I guess this is just one that Verizon has for the time being. I'm sure LTE will come with it's share of trade offs.
