Personally I think Microsoft is taking their time with the OS, and trying not to go the Android route with 10000 different devices in 100000 different flavors. Having it all standardized is a giant step forward, and will only get better as time goes on.
I agree with the whole lack of 4G statement, but in my experience, it's great when you have it, but not mission critical. I rather take a solid OS which is new and different, than a rehash of something else. This is coming from an Android user and fan(I have a HTC EVO at the moment).
I'm actually impressed that Microsoft is taking their time to develop the OS, and not just rush out to market. People will slowly jump on, especially those tired of Android or iOS.
