It Kinda Bothers Me

That everyone seems to be eating this up hook, line and sinker (I for one am not) what appears to be a smear campaign against Android all of a sudden to make it seem far less viable an option in choosing your operating system. They all have a diverse array of vulnerabilities in regards to the compromising of cellular data... this is neither new, nor did Android make claim to being the OS where that could never happen. THEREFORE RICH, ITS NOT AT ALL NEWSWORTHY. A bug in China? Really?? SMH... Long Standing Bug.... NOT NEW. I would prefer that you posted no stories at all than posting garbage in the absence of news, it makes you all the less credible a source of technology information, whether its true garbage or not (and I in no way mean ...

You do realize that both these news article that your talking about have been posted by every other major phone site like engadget and androidcentral? PS is actually one of the best when it only comes to posting legitimate news. 😉

Hmm... so because everyone else posted it they should too, regardless of whether or not its filler garbage? NO, I dont think so, and I will reiterate my sentiment on how doing so makes them less legitimate in my eyes. Incidentally, I was THRILLED to see that FierceWireless (my other bookmarked preference) didnt take part in this game of monkey see monkey do, and still managed to have many interesting articles and useful information available. Just saying...

I love my droid but this is an issue. It keeps happening to my brother. Multiple phones and still not resolved. I thought he was nuts but it keeps happening and I then I witnessed it.

I haven't either, and I've had the Droid, Incredible, and now the X. I have NEVER had any issues. This is obviously something VERY contained and minimal that is being blown way out of proportion, as others have said.

My brother has a droid.. I told him to try handcent to see if that helps. And while I agree its not very common and probably blown out of proportion a little it still needs to be fixed.

We make a serious effort to maintain a consistent threshold for news. It's never going to match up 100% with everyone else's idea of what we should cover, but nonetheless we do try very hard to avoid the news that we consider fluff or a waste of your time.

A bug in an OS is not always news. This did seem like news to us for a few reasons:
  1. Having been present for more than one version of Android and applying to phones from most manufacturers and carriers, it affects a huge number of US consumers.
  2. It's serious. As Engadget pointed out, it could easily get you fired, end a relationship, create family discord, etc.
  3. Google didn't seem to be taking it seriously. If it had been high priority and Google was clearly

Thanks Rich!
I agree though, this is news about an issue and will need to be fixed. If the news doesn't get posted, then Google will never get around to fixing it. Until it happens to you, you will have a different response.

For it to affect a huge number of consumers, a huge number of consumers would have to have some idea of how to even go about accessing 3rd party downloads, which they dont...

umm... getting fired for a text w/o your employer even confronting you about it? Lawsuit much? family discord w/o direct conversation to clarify an unpleasant text?
wasnt much of a relationship if it ended over a text, blessing in disguise if you ask me. None of these are really serious possibilities when you stop and think about it instead of spreading mass hysteria. Engadget's article even approached this with a bit more sarcasm than seriousness.

Google doesnt seem to be taking it seriously... shouldnt this be a clue? Google's response would only be newswo...

What do third-party downloads have to do with a text messaging bug built into the OS?

I think these are extremely serious bugs. They concern me greatly, personally. I use my phone for business. That definitely includes text messaging my employees, and when I do, it's because it's time-sensitive. If a message looks like it went through but went to the wrong person without my knowledge, that's a huge problem for me. I need a phone more reliable than that.

Google not taking it seriously is the problem.

My apologies, I was initially responding to both Android stories because I'm far too lazy to tirade on both stories at the same time (that and theyre practically posted together) So the 3rd party software comment was more directed at the 1st article posted. Also, in retrospect Rich, the few lines you wrote about the text messaging bugs alone were pretty impartial, concise and informative. I guess the China bug piece bothered me a lot more than just the text messaging bit... One more thing to point out though, Engadget went on to say that these were issues only if you dont pay attention to what you're doing... i.e. if you're actually paying attention to what your phone is doing you could completely avoid the text issues. It screws up (as th...

There are two text messaging bugs. One where it shows you it's screwing up but it's easy to miss if you're in a hurry (aren't we all). The other bug is even worse because it will tell you it's sending to one person but actually go to another.

As for the third-party malicious software, we wrote that up as a cautionary tale as much as anything. It's a good example of why you need to be careful with third-party stores and side-loaded software, and also why you need to be very careful with the privacy and security permissions you grant to apps. We didn't intend to scare people away from Android, just caution Android users to be careful.

Especially this time of year, there are a lot of first-time smartphone owners out there who don't know (...

Every system has flaws. Hook a password protected iPhone up to an Ubuntu-powered PC (probably any linux distro will do) and watch as the PC mounts the device and gives you access to any documents or photos stored on it. Major, massive, garage-sized security hole, and yet it doesn't stop the device from selling well.
So Android has an intermittent, incredibly difficult to reproduce SMS bug. Hardly a smear campaign. And I doubt it will slow the OS's market growth.
