It just sounds like Microsoft already knows they have lost the handset OS battle and they aren't even going to really try to get back in.

Two quotes that pretty much sum it all up:

"It will take years" and "wont comment on handset sales"

Really...years in the mobile/tech industry? You are already years out of date.

Not wanting to boast about handset sales, even when LG is proud of selling a pathetic number of handsets after a launch? WP7 is looking like a flop.

I love my HD7. I think they need to advertise more, everyone that has played with my phone loves it too. So I think if they allow more people to have the opportunity to get one in their hands it will sell.
