Well at least Tmo. . .

Well at least Tmo has plans to bump the speeds *up* to
42mb/s, and not just stop at 21mb/s like AT&T!!!!

Touche.

AT&T plans to go to LTE, and skip the 42Mbps....

LTE = 100Mbps in theoretical max.

100mb/s isn't until LTE-Advanced is deployed. And who knows when that will be!!! Probably not until 2013+

And no one on Tmobile will EVER get speeds nead 42MB/s unless they are the only person with a tmobile cell pinging off that network of towers.. and even then I doubt it.

There's a reason others are moving from HSPA/EVDO

So LTE will allow a completely congested cell site to still offer 100Mbps to everyone connected to it? How'd they overcome that technological hurdle? Is Skynet now handling the backhaul?

🤣 🤣 🤣

skynet is aware! 😳

I never claimed that it would.

You'll notice that Verizon, the carrier that is launching LTE, is doing so posting estimated real world speeds, NOT theoretical caps

I think advertising by the caps is dishonest because the chance of that happening on ANY cell tech is virtually nil

You cannot say that is true information, to get estimated real speeds dump a bunch of users on a tower that has lte and run your speed test then! No one will ever get the speeds they claim at this time!

They've run thousands of simulations and MONTHS of real world speed trials. Their simulations are run assuming near max capacity, as were their test trials. Any decent company tests for heavy load, not optimal situations.

It's not 100% accurate, no, but it's a lot better than them pushing the fact that the devices are capable of bursts over 20MB/s (they are)

For their EVDO, their posted speeds are 800KBPS-1.4MB/s while in reality it's possible to get MUCH faster

Sure, but don't you think they'll get upwards of 15-18mb/s of real world speeds when Tmo upgrades to 42mb/s?
...
Menno

Nov 3, 2010, 5:18 PM
Possibly. The problem is to get those speeds requires a MASSIVE investment by Tmobile, a lot more than even LTE or Wimax would require (even assuming same real world speeds)

It's like seeing how fast you can make a car when everyone else is using rockets

It woul,d require lots of fiber optics to the towers, right?
...
Menno

Nov 3, 2010, 5:39 PM
It's not the fiber to the tower, but the tech on the tower really.

A LTE/Wimax tower should be able to provide faster speeds to more people with the same amount of fiber running to that tower instead of HSPA+

Well all I have to say is that today is the !!3rd!! day of the 11th month of 2010 and Vzn still hasn't announced launch details slash slash outrageously unreasonable rate plans for LTE yet!!!

Does it have to be the middle of December or something?!!!?

They won't have handsets until sometime next year anyway.

And remember Jay, they just DROPPED the price on their 3g data across the board, so don't call the plans crazy yet (I doubt they'll be like Clear, but I wouldn't call them crazy yet)

Uh huh, we'll see, I won't be one bit surprised to see a measly
10gb's/mo for $80/mo. I'm aware about the handset timeline, at least we'll get an idea during CES in January which isn't too far away.

USB modems will be coming before years end, but this is November, so appearently Verizon is literal when they said end of 2010, end means December, not November/December.

10GB is $80 on 3G right now. (two weeks ago, the same plan would be $199 for 10GB, or 120 if you sprang for 2 separate cards)

Lowell McAdam said that LTEs efficiency is lightyears ahead of EVDO

Well between Hulu, news videos, and porn, I used about 35gb^mo when I had Clear.

Who knows, perhaps LTE will put out bursts of 20-25mb/s on occassion, most I ever got with Clear was 15mb/s, but that was only like twice.

So it would be cheaper to use the AWS spectrum for LTE than upgrade?
...
Menno

Nov 3, 2010, 8:13 PM
I think the issue is Tmobile doesn't really have spectrum to upgrade into. They're using AWS for their current 3g so they can't really push out LTE on the same bands.

Tmobiles caught between a rock and a hard place with this. Yes, they can push HSPA faster, but not efficiently. And they don't really have anywhere to go with LTE unless they partner with another company (why I found their spurning of Sprint surprising)

If they do not have the spectrum to roll out LTE then this is their only move, Menno.

actually, if you go to att website and type in LTE in search box, it will bring up information on their LTE (4G) Technology. The site says that deployment will be in 2011 in select markets. I do know that full deployment will be accomplished by end of 2011. LTE in select test markets now for ATT 😁

If by full deployment you mean overlaying their entire 2G and 3G network with LTE, then I find that hard to believe. It's been about 5 years since they started 3G, and AT&T hasn't blanketed their 2G network with 3G.

I believe it would start in metro areas, then slowly expand outward.

Man, Half you guys are really lost here.
Let's see T-1 or IP? Who has what for a backbone?
T-1 = 1.5Mb
Fiber = Gige

We know AT&T does not have IP so get those 3.5G and 4G posts off this thread. Wait - maybe you are on your I-PHONE so you are still downloading my post, that is if the connection did not break and drop you all together.
