Why not jump ship to 2.2 instead of TESTING 2.1?

Not to mention Gingerbread (3.0 or 2.3) is around the corner...

Probably only the newest Android smartphones will get Gingerbread. Ones with 1ghz processors and so on. We'll probably know more before the end of the year.

I doubt my Motorola Droid will get Gingerbread.
