Verizon is good, but try to get a signal in a downtown below ground office under a 70 story building. This will help greatly..

I don't quite get why people feel the need to talk bad about a great product that will help alot of people out with their cell service. In most cases, the reason someone would need something like this is because none of the carriers can get great service to this customer's home. In my opinion a customer will choose a carrier that works well where they live. If none of the carriers can do this for a customer, then what options beside a network extender does a customer have?

well i mean honestly.. then verizon shouldnt talk so much about thier coverage if people dont get the coverage that verizon can offer..

i mean it is a good idea...

if they wanted they could probably make some money off of it if they wanted..

but the thing is what does verizon constatly do they try and upsell thier coverage i mean whats the point of getting a company that walks across a field saying "can you hear me? Good!" i mean thats false advertisement and for them to need to do this

i mean kind of makes em look bad

the only reason i'm going to jump into this one is because 2 years ago i had vzw and lived 1 mile from a verified vzw tower here in Belleville, Michigan. couldn't get a signal to save my life. it sucked especially in winter i had to go outside to sit in my truck to have a conversation. so yea i mean i have tmo now and never drop a call or have to stand by a window and im in a garden apartment with 3G coverage showing 3/5 bars. my service with vzw was so bad they had no choice but to release me of my contract with no ETF penalties on my 2 lines. things might be different now but i'm sorry, if you brag about your service and a sub cant catch a signal from 1 mile away in a townhouse on the top floor. idk what to tell you. no it wasnt a bad phon...

They up play their coverage because they really do have the most coverage compared to the competition.... it is not possible to have 100 percent of the USA covered.
In my own personal experience in the area i live verizon has the best coverage. Also traveling across the united states down the west coast, east coast, and everything in between verizon has always had better coverage than at&t, sprint, and t-mobile.

Right, there's a difference between being the largest and being perfect. Verizon isn't perfect, they're the largest.

I see, and get your point, but to classify this as a "great" product is a little misleading based on my own experience.

I bought one of these devices a few months ago as I had dead-spots in my house (most specifically the basement) and I will say that in the basement, it does definitely help and I no longer experience phone calls going right to voice mail. That said, in the rest of the house, where there is a "hand-off" between the extender and regular cell coverage, it is far from smooth and does result in dropped calls.

I have called VZW about this and their test show that the unit is working okay.

Yes I am glad that I got it, but, I do have to make sure that when no one is in the basement that we unplug it as it just raises too...

I've been with Verizon for8 months, and I do get dropped calls, and my data does drop from3G to 1x. And this is all on what is **supposedly** "America's Most Reliable 3G Network"

It's no better, or no worse than AT&T was. AT&T actually stayed on 3G more.

I'm speaking from the real world btw, not some advertisement.

@Jayshmay, or old farts like me who love Apple products, still stay with Verizon because of the current network superiority, and don't necessarily want "individuality" but be able to make calls, access our apps, and utilize other typical smart phone features with ease. Yes, if VZW does offer an iPhone, I will dump my Blackberry and get one even though I am concerned about the strain a VZW iPhone will put on their network.

I agree that the 'greatness' of Verizon's network is exaggerated, but I don't think this is a 'scam' or anything, it is an attempt to assist customers who have difficulty getting coverage in their homes. The #1 complaint people have about wireless companies is the inability to get coverage at home. This helps fix that.

Contrary to myth, it is not at all difficult to find 'dead zones' in Verizon coverage, particularly in dense urban areas, moreover, no company is delusional enough to be willing to promise coverage indoors. Getting consistent coverage indoors is virtually impossible due to things completely beyond the control of the carrier, such as what the building is made of.

Everything you just said in your post will be invalid once we get VOLTE (Voice Over LTE).

Personally I define a 'dead zone' as a place where there is NO signal at all.
...
DiamondPro

Oct 19, 2010, 12:08 AM
Not really!

Lte will provide better indoor build penetration due to its 700mhz band but that still only in theory.

So far there is no real world proof to back this up.

And if it does it will not be absolute indoor coverage and will still have dead zones.
...

Oct 19, 2010, 12:52 AM
In theory? You do know that the 700mhz that LTE is being built on is from the analog tv shut off,...right? Well guess what, for nearly 60yrs analog tv signals penetrated buildings just fine.

Well, again, NOTHING is perfect. Until it is here and covering everywhere, there is no way to say, with complete certainty, that we will suddenly live in cellphone utopia.

But no coverage is perfect.

That being said, i think they're about read to light up 4g in the cities. I was down in philly over the weekend and my phone was FAST. they have the backhaul there. Averages 2.5mbps down pinging Seattle.

Dude, yyour confusing me, you said you were in Philly over the weekend, and then you mentioned Seattle.

Well I'm in Las Vegas, and LTE is here, but I don't notice any major difference in speeds.
...

Oct 18, 2010, 8:28 PM
You won't be able to access LTE with your phone (and it's not launched just yet)

I was in philly but I was pinging a seatle server to get how the speed was going across country.

only 200MS lag too

If they switched it on. Philly is one of their main cities. they have the whole thing laid down with fios as well as wireless.

Depending on when they started on upgrading vegas, they might not have flipped the switch yet.

I was down there 2 weeks ago and it was slow as usual, so this is a recent thing

Absolutly!

Well Verizon needs to flick the switch here too dang it! So I can enjoy better 3G speeds!

Btw, I sent you an email with an Engadget link asking if you think Apple getting a multi-touch patent will effect multi-touch on Android,. . .what do you think?
...
Menno

Oct 18, 2010, 8:51 PM
I doubt it. that patent is very specific, and multitouch itself isn't something new. If they try going after people for multi touch in general all people have to do is show off that multi touch has been around for decades.
...
Jayshmay

Oct 18, 2010, 8:54 PM
Decades?!!!!? What consumer applications have had multi-touch for decades?

So what is the difference between the multi-touch you and I enjoy on our Droids, and the patent Apple got?
...

Oct 18, 2010, 10:29 PM
apple's is a two step. meaning after you tell it to do something, you can tell it to do another thing soon after. So pinch zoom, and then tell it to do something else contextually.

But that's really thin ice to try and base a patent off of. a lot of apple's patents won't stand up in court when it comes down to it.

Your right Verizon is not America's most reliable 3g network Sprint is. Bottom line when it comes to 3g coverage verizon has the most, att has the fastest on average and Sprint has the most reliable. As far as 3g network size its Verizon-Sprint-att-tmobile. But I personally would rather have a carrier with dependable 3g and Blazing fast 4g speeds when I need it along with Unlimited use! 😎

Do they give Sprint customers koolaid when they get a phone? Everything I've ever read says Sprint is number 3 in everything except customer service, oh, and number of people who can't pass a credit check.

Actually, this is an ideal solution for a person like me:

Verizon gets terrible service in my apartment (I haven't tried the other carriers here yet).
Sprint is nonexistent in my mother's house.
AT&T is very flaky at my sister's house.
T-Mobile stinks at my work.

My best bet is to get a network extender for my home, since I don't really think getting one for an alternate carrier and sticking it at work or somewhere in my mother or sister's home would be good. They might not want that item just sitting there. Besides that, I get a pretty good value for the money with Verizon... I've compared pricing for the features I desire and the closest is AT&T. T-Mobile is cheaper, but I need 3G.
