i got that when i put 2.2 froyo on my g1...but one thing i will say. idk who all here likes android but if you've been keeping up on the tmobile G2 and newer phones. it just seems like google is turning into apple with the closed system. blah blah blah its for security they claim and to prevent high call volumes to tech support for idiots who brick their phones trying to root. i call BS. they're already coming up with craftier ways to prevent people from flashing custom roms to android devices and rooting which was the best part of getting an android. if you take that away...what do you have? just a half azzed iphone wanna be again. this is coming from a hard core android fan btw. 😕

What makes you think it's Google locking down these phones? The phone manufacturers and carriers are the ones doing it. Android is licensed in such a way that those who choose to use it have lots of leeway in how they deploy it. If they choose to lock it down, they can do that.

If that's the case, then why isn't my Captivate locked in this way? And why does the Backflip have Yahoo as its default search engine, while the Fascinate has Bing?

Google gave the phone makers and carriers lots of discretion in how they deploy Android.

All the locks are a product of htc, motorola, etc. They're not part of android or google.

The Nexus One is the best example of how every Android phone SHOULD be.

Everything else is just the N1 with the manufacturer and carriers crap added to it.

Nonetheless, it's still all in the spirit of Android: an open platform that allows the manufacturers and carriers to do whatever they want with it, and sometimes the consumers too.

is a half-arsed "me too" platform that Google knocked off from Apple. The only difference is that Android is adware where competing OS's are tied in with hardware sales. That's it.

It's not 'open' - it's not GPL, it's not some community-driven software project. We're not seeing manufacturers pool their resources to continually better the Android experience (hell, they're not even bettering the experience) nor will we ever.

It's not 'better' - the development library is still a sloppy mess, app quality is still dismal, and all of the little niceties that make iOS and WebOS delightful are not accounted for. They can't even get Skype working on the majority of handsets yet.

All Android is it gives carriers like Verizon, T-Mo, and S...

All you have ever been is an Android basher. Once you get past all of your false assumptions about the Android platform, maybe you'll be able to have a valid opinion.
