BTW this was more tongue in cheek then anything else.
Many times, carriers buy spectrum just to sit on top of it, and hold it, whether for future use, or just to keep a competitor from owning it. Also, they use it for roaming licenses.
The jump to another breed of CDMA is going to have to be really, really cheap or it will never happen. LTE expansions make so much more sense!
If it were going to be really, really cheap- the tech would have been discovered and finalized years ago and it would already be deployed. Also note that the guy they quoted saying a fix would come available next ye...

Actually, if my recollection is right, they pretty much are going to shut down 3G after LTE becomes established. Maybe not right away, but probably within 2 years of the LTE footprint exceeding the current 3G footprint.
I'm trying desperately to find the source now, but I SWEAR I saw a report from a press conference sometime between April and July of this year where the Verizon CTO said that the 3G network would be decommissioned before the 2G network would ever get taken down. He put a 10-year lifespan on the 1xRTT network and about a 5-6 year death sentence on EVDO.
I.just.can't.find.it.now.....
