Bout time!

I'm glad Verizon is finally jumping on issues like this. Although I also feel it's too little too late. I mean, with LTE on the horizon a fix like this has become more minor. I'm not saying it would be a waste of time but they should have done this a long time ago. Even if they would fix the network to allow voice and data at the same time I'm not a customer that would impact alot since I do one or the other most of the time. Either way it's a point in the right direction.

this is interesting, because in the brochure for the "curve 3g" it says the device supports talking and surfing at the same time. I don't know if it was written generally so they wouldn't have to make different trifolds for each carrier. I can talk and surf on my devour while I'm at my house or on wifi, but its not a big deal to me since i rarely use it. I hope if they do figure it out though that it is back wards compatible

The Curve 3G is produced for multiple carriers, so they could brag that the device was compatible without mentioning that the feature may not be supported by your carrier, after all it doesn't make sense to produce different books for different carriers.

The device can support it but that doesnt mean the network gives you the bandwith for it.

I think what people forget about has nothing to do with "talking and surfing the web at the same time." It's about RECEIVING calls at the same time as using the web. I don't know how many times I've been surfing the web and my calls go straight to voicemail.

There ya go, VZW just following AT&T again, they've had this for years.

Not 'AT&T' so much as just 'GSM'...this is a feature of GSM networks and is one of the technical reasons why I believe that GSM is superior to CDMA...and obviously Verizon must agree or they wouldn't be planning to switch over to LTE, which is a GSM based technology.

That is correct but, its not just GSM though. Its the GSM 3G band that makes this possible. Tmo and Att have seperate voice and data bands. To this day, If you use GSM and are on EGDE or GPRS, you cannot use voice and data at the same time.

And Tmo 😁

Yes TMO too. And I do know it has to do with gsm and hsdpa, its just the US cdma carriers screwed up using EVDO-0 and EVDO-A. If the went to B and some of the others they could have had i right now.

BTW this was more tongue in cheek then anything else.

I hear ya. Do you know if their LTE network is going to be on a seperate band or not, like GSM 3G?

Verizon just like AT&T will use their 700Mhz spectrum primary, for LTE. They also own AWS 1700MHz spectrum too, but they have not mentioned what they will use it for, or if they will use it in conjunction to their 700MHz spectrum for LTE.

Many times, carriers buy spectrum just to sit on top of it, and hold it, whether for future use, or just to keep a competitor from owning it. Also, they use it for roaming licenses.

LTE already has simultaneous voice and data built in. If it takes another six months to develop a simultaneous CDMA standard and make it feasible, it will be almost a year before it can be deployed, and the LTE expansion plans are broad enough that 3G multi-tasking won't be worth deploying at all, unless it's a software-only upgrade that doesn't require new handsets or new towers.

The jump to another breed of CDMA is going to have to be really, really cheap or it will never happen. LTE expansions make so much more sense!

If it were going to be really, really cheap- the tech would have been discovered and finalized years ago and it would already be deployed. Also note that the guy they quoted saying a fix would come available next ye...

Agreed. VZW and Sprint going VoRA seems backwards. VoRA would make sense for a carrier like cricKet. VZW and Sprint need to focus on their 4th generation networks.

The 4G network will take several years to fully saturate the market like the current coverage does (straight from Verizon). This is a great thing to do. Even if it takes a year to implement and launch, it's still going to be around for many, many years. It's not like once LTE is fully implemented they are going to just shut down the 3G network.

Actually, if my recollection is right, they pretty much are going to shut down 3G after LTE becomes established. Maybe not right away, but probably within 2 years of the LTE footprint exceeding the current 3G footprint.

I'm trying desperately to find the source now, but I SWEAR I saw a report from a press conference sometime between April and July of this year where the Verizon CTO said that the 3G network would be decommissioned before the 2G network would ever get taken down. He put a 10-year lifespan on the 1xRTT network and about a 5-6 year death sentence on EVDO.

I.just.can't.find.it.now.....
