$60/mo for unlimited voice and text on a prepaid service from a national carrier is a great offering.

Drive prices down down down 🙂

I think it only charges you for the days you use it as opposed to $60/month. 2 dollars a day unlimited talk and text is great for foreign travelers or people who don't use their cell phone much or have high usage only on some days. It also seemed that incoming texts alone would not trigger the $2/day charge but outgoing texts, IM or phone calls connected would.

Wait. If it has been $60/mo for unlmiited voice/text on prepaid for over a year now, why is it $69.99 for unlimited minutes (not including text) for contract pricing? Am I missing something...

You're not missing anything. Other than a slightly smaller "goPhone" footprint you're not giving anything up by going with the goPhone plan for less money.

I would suggest T-mobile's unlimited talk and text for $50 or Boost's unlimited talk, text, and web for $50 before I would spend more for an AT&T plan.

You get full priced phones for the gophone plan, or you can purchase their gophones, which aren't that great. Even compared to the contracted versions, the gophones break quicker. They're kind of like the barely-passed-inspection phones from the Manuf. Most prepaid companies are like that, lower quality phones = lower prices and easier to get away with not subsidizing the pricing.

Metro, Cricket, Virgin, and Boost all have 1st quality phones...they just aren't top of the line, latest and greatest phones.

You are correct that AT&T and T-Mobile both have "select" prepaid phones that in many people's opinions are junk.

You get the status of paying more, being able to roam and pay much more, having to pay for days even when you don't use your phone and getting a subsidize phone with a contract. If you don't use data then prepaid is the obvious choice based upon the rates...

Unless AT&T has changed the way they offer services since I worked for them last February, the footprint is identical to the contract service. The sole purpose of the contract service is to sell subsidized phones to attract more customers and to also attract those customers to higher priced packages (premium data, for example). After-all, if there truly was a risk for AT&T it would much more difficult to get out of a CONTRACT. We all know traditional contracts are not easy things to get out of 🙂
