Wow blackberry for once is not making an outdated piece of junk. This looks awesome actually. I wonder if it will use its own app store or use that already offered from the blackberry app world.

It's a blackberry, so I would guess BB App World.

But it's not running BB OS (from what everyone is saying)

So unless they make some translation tools, or have a BBOS virtualizer, this most likely has it's own set of apps.

Is it just me, or does the screenshot really look like WebOS?

It kind of does look like WebOS - I love those "Cards" that you can flip through. No need for a task killer!!

unless you have a winmo phone or blackberries.

The idea that android needs a task killer is a myth.

I agree, but the boys I work with seem to think that task killer is the greatest thing since sliced bread!!

Then you just smile and laugh at them when their apps start force closing.

Agreed, if I do want to close anything on my Epic Samsung gave me that power (not that Android can't handle itself).

But if you check out the promo video on youtube for this sexy (i do understand it's RIM we're talking about), it shows signs of a huge ripoff of WebOS. I can't be crazy.

Well. . .it would be nice if *more* apps had an Exit option in their menu settings! Some apps do, not enough though.
...

Sep 28, 2010, 10:12 AM
That's what I'm saying Jay. You don't NEED an exit option. The concept of NEEDING to turn off an app in android is a false one.

Hmm,. . . ๐Ÿคจ are you saying Android has artificial intelligence and that apps turn themselves off?
...
Menno

Sep 28, 2010, 10:22 AM
That's exactly what I'm saying.

when you hit the home button out of an app, it puts that app in a save state. This means it doesnt consume any more of your CPU, and it just sits in memory you're not using, so you can switch back to it without feeling like you left.

If your phone needs more memory, it will tell the app to shut down totally. It will also do this if you haven't used an app in awhile.

Android does all the task management for you. The only time it doesn't is if the App is coded poorly, in which case you Uninstall the app itself since it sucks.

I just wrote a huge post on task killers over at the blog >.

I noticed a huge improvement in performance when I used Advanced Task Killer on my droid until 2.2 came out. Once I had 2.2 on there I noticed my phone didn't slow down as much and my battery would last longer without me using my task killer. So although I don't use task killers anymore, they did make my droid life better for a while.

To be honest, every task manager I've tried for Android, seemed far more annoying then any benefits achieved. I have extra usb cables to charge off a computer at work, I have car chargers, so never saw the benefit.

My phone would also be noticeably faster when using a task killer before 2.2.
...

which is why everything improved.

The reason the task killer gave you increased battery life before was because you had too many things you set up to sync data (twitter, facebook, news, etc)

You can get a MUCH better effect by just setting each of those account to sync at longer intervals, or just when you manually refresh.

2.2 added the ability of the OS to take over these sync times and make them all happen at once instead of one at a time, which also increased battery life.

The next Storm (not the refresh being released soon) is also rumored to work off of a completely separate OS. I would assume it would be based off of this. Gives you an idea of where at least touch style blackberries are headed ๐Ÿ˜

They're headed to a lawsuit from HP by the looks of things. I'm with Menno on this.

Yeah. I'm sure HP is going to sue RIM over the similarities to their OS. ๐Ÿ™„
That's ludricrous to even suggest.

1st of all, learn to recognize a throw away comment meant to a. be humorous and b. illustrate the apparent simlarities between the two gui's.

2nd of all, if they are that similar, why would that be ludicrous?

Easy, tiger... sheesh!

It'd be ludicrious as do you reeeeally think RIM (target of a lot of infringement lawsuits) would be so reckless to directly rip off an entire os? Seriously.
...

If they are the target of a lot of infringement lawsuits then it would seem that sort of recklessness may be expected of them.

I'm certainly not saying that it will happen... and i havent even seen the playbook in action yet so I clearly cannot have a strong opinion.

But if it's as similar as it looks then it is certainly not ludicrous. I mean, you're HP, you've spent a lot of money on Palm so you can have a distinct presence in the tablet field, then RIM comes along and swipes your GUI.

Dude, did I really deserve the eye roll?
...
JeffroPuff

Sep 28, 2010, 1:37 PM
Alright alright, I'll concede - the eye roll was a little unnecessary... I underestimated the value of your position. Sorry ๐Ÿ˜‰
But anyway, I think RIM would be aware that they are "me too"ing WebOS on this one and would have the foresight to tread very lightly and make sure that they are dotting i's and crossing t's.
Most of their lawsuits come from back end technology patent infringements that Joe Schmo consumer wouldn't recognize or care about. The front end OS is something any idiot watching NBC Nightly News would recognize. The backlash from stealing "the interface" so to speak would ring hard with consumers. Hence, I submit, they would tread lightly. ๐Ÿ™‚

No, it's not just you. I thought the same thing. At first I thought it was a misposted picture. Then I thought I remembered reading RIM licensing the technology. However, I can't find anything to support any of my thoughts.

If BB is implementing this UI, I would think there is going to be an issue of patent infringement for sure. The resemblance is too uncanny.
