For businesses / FEMA
This isn't meant for consumers. This is meant for businesses that deal with extreme conditions.

I think this could be a niche hit with some consumers who work outdoors, play outdoors, or live in one of the many rural areas in the united states that has poor to zero terrestrial coverage. The west coast, Alaska, and canada are some good examples. I have an Iridium satellite phone, and I am a "consumer".
While Iridium is global, i bet most satellite consumers don't need global coverage, and TerreStar is much more economical for the consumer.
Satellite is a great way to fill in a vast area that will never see terrestrial coverage due to economic reasons.

Not until prices become more realistic. This current offering reverts back to when cellphones were in their infancy stage. I owned a bag phone and my rates were a little more than a dollar a minute for calls. This adds up very quickly.
It has taken the wireless industry this long to make rates somewhat affordable to consumers.. I don't expect satellite prices to drop for at least another couple of years due to most everyone having coverage already where they need it.
