This has to be one of the most moronic things a carrier has done.

So...if downloading and using the "Google" search app is still going to use Bing, what they hell is the point of releasing the "Google" search app?

You misread it. The article explains several ways you can use Google search, but it will not replace Bing.

"You can go to Google's home page and download an icon from that page and use Google as an alternative search option." Alternately, Raney said that Fascinate users can "download Voice Search from the Marketplace and when you use Voice Search, it searches in Google."

So they are talking about the search button on the phone, not the search button on the widget? That makes more sense. I thought they were saying even you install the legit search app from Google, that it will still search Bing.

It just means Bing is the default browser. You will be able to download a google search app(which will not use Bing)... I don't care for Bing, but is it really that big of a hassle for people to launch the browser to use google now?

I suppose the problem is that being these Android phones are "Google phones", not having Google implemented throughout kind of hinders things. Google search is used in more than just the search widget. It's tied into the maps, it's tied into facebook, google voice, google talk...everything.

ditto

and equally as stupid for Microsoft since it just makes them hated for trying to force what people don't want on them...

if people wanted Microsoft they'd by WP7
but most android users don't and won't
..and they won't use Bing even if it's ugly
head pokes up on their phone

and by the way just use Launcher Pro and you
won't have to see it.. or anything else Verizon
sticks on there you don't want

Frankly I cannot understand why anyone cares about the default search engine anyway....

Whenever I do a search on my phone I either use the browser to go to the home page of whatever search engine I want or use the installed search application

Why would anyone even bother with using the 'default search' anyway?
