Fake Skype

This is Fake Skype- your calls are just routed over the air. This isn't real VOIP, so you can't make calls over WiFi.

Maybe it's because Verizon Wireless's data network isn't fast enough. I don't know. But this arrangement is why the HTC Evo and Nexus One can't do Skype either.

Skype will not be pushed to its full potential unless this exclusivity ends. Only VZW android phones will be able to get the gimped version of skype while every other android won't.

So VZW smartphones + iPhone atm which is lame.

Skype-to-Skype calls, to or from your mobile, computer or TV
These calls are completely free. They don’t count towards your Verizon Wireless minutes allowance.

and international is dirt cheap monthly rate$

so why, and who cars if it runs through voip. For the consumer it is a great value either way.

I don't think I have ever read anything from you that was positive besides apple.

Because...

1) You need a voice plan to use Skype. (Fine for these dumbphones but bad for Android)

2) You can't Skype over WiFi if you have a poor VZW signal or are abroad.

3) Android users who aren't on VZW can't use Skype at all. I couldn't Skype on my Nexus One.

I've got Skype on my iPhone and it's killer. Voice quality over 3G is phenomenal, and I use it just like my regular phone.

I get all of that.... those are the negatives, my point is there are a lot of positives to the consumer with (Verizon)this new feature added to there choices but you only ever rant about the negative. Yes there are those users that would like that....i get your negative, but there are a ton of people who where just given an awesome option starting today (may not be perfect) but it a hell of a lot better then the option they had yesterday which was none.

I read this as more of a Verizon related article and not an article about how people with the evo and other androids are getting screwed.

I can't understand why they can't allow wifi usage on android and why they are now blocking Fring... but that is not what I took out of this articl...

The only positive is that that you get the reliability of a voice network. That's not insignificant, but the negatives are tenfold, especially for other users. That solution is fine for dumbphones, but smartphones on 3G networks?

you said a positive....reliable network
I knew you could do it

Now... Screw Skype for blocking wifi on android, or at best not getting their lazy asses around to making it work

They're not blocking WiFi, they're basically just forwarding calls to the voice network.. in other words, they're giving you SkypeOut.

Skype for Android and these dumbphones isn't 'real' Skype. It's not like the iPhone client at all, which is true VOIP. You don't get the better call quality (it's like someone's in the room with you- it's freaky good) , you can't call over WiFi, and forget Video Chatting if it does ever come.
