Blackberry -> Droid 2 ? Business Use

cguella

I am due for an upgrade on VZW and have had a Blackberry on BES since the beginning of time for business. I am intrigued by the Droid 2 and am || that close to switching to the Droid 2. For any of you who have converted please use this thread to convince me to stay or go... So far I think BBM would be gone (of course) as would really good messaging support using BES (of course). But does messaging work well on D2 or is it still that dial and wait crap like the Palm and iPhone? Or is it always on like BB. Are the things you could do very easily with the keyboard still pretty easy or do you have to navigate lots of touch screen complicated menus to get something simple done. Calls ok? Switching and sliding a real hassle? Any thoughts w...

Your best bet would be to switch to att and get a BB Torch, it's definately off the chains.

Not to defend the AT&T fanboy, but the better quality of hardware, the less you need a huge processor or memory. Internalized memory is overrated anyways. =p

Not a fanboy what so ever. I'm just saying that i'm impressed with what they've done coming from a 9700. I obviously don't need a hardcore processor and a bunch of ****ty apps(even tho it has SOME apps). Good camera and pretty respectable battery life. Also, BBM works great and the features are nice. So you can defend your dickrobot phone all you want, what I said is strickly an opinion.

Sounds more like fan-boy bias to me.

Interesting. I hate the web browser on my Tour. The Torch looks pretty good and maybe fixed in that regard. Since it is primarily a business phone maybe the (my particular) better choice is the Torch. In my case - I can't imagine that less than 1ghz processor will make my mail, BBM or camera slower or worse (video maybe). In the end there has been a lot about the speed of the 1ghz processor (benchmarks looked good etc) on the D2 but many of those apps for the BB and/or Droid worlds drain battery anyway and I would eventually not use for that reason (some weather and GPS apps in particular). So if I like Verizon, do nothing for now. If I like ATT (which I do) sell my Tour on Fleabay switch to ATT and give the 30 day buyers remorse perio...

It's hard to compare processors of the BB and Android when BB doesn't come close to offering the functionality of Android devices (multi-touch, multiple screens, graphic processor, etc). BB processors work good for BB, but that same processor won't do much for Android.

Anyways... All is i'm saying is if you like your Tour(minus the browser), you'll love the Torch(partially because of the browser). Size wise it's about the same only it slides. The pinch zoom feature is nice and the overall touchscreen is very responsive. I would urge you to at least try it out, I think you'll be impressed.

The Android OS is an excellent piece of software. I had BB phones prior to Android and I've never looked back. Like anything, you have to learn some things because it's night and day between how the two operate (and not in a bad way). The Droid was the first Android phone that I purchased and it was bar far the best phone I've owned. The keyboard was a little quirky but the features, functionality, and general build of the phone more than made up for it. You also have to remember that the Droid (and probably Droid 2) was/is made out of some sort of metal or graphite material ala RAZR so it's very well built. The glass is also Gorilla Glass, which is the strongest of its kind on the market. On a functionality aspect, emails arrive automatical...

RIM encryption is top notch and you can be sure your wireless life is secure. Why do you think the insane Saudi Government shut down part of RIM service? Now they are pressing RIM to ease up on security so they can monitor things. Look at the recent series of hacks involving the first SMS based Trojan involving Android? Or the recent iOS4 security update? Don't remember the last time RIM had security issues. Just my $0.02

They are all susceptible to security threats, so don't get disillusion.

Oh, and if you read the articles about the Android Trojan it's only downloadable if you get your software from unauthorized sources...in other words, places outside the market.

Cguella, it doesn't that anyone addressed your direct questions as of yet; there has been only a smattering of phone comparisons. Let me see if I can help.

Yes, with the Android service BBM is lost. With an unlimited text package, which most smartphone users have, this is mitigated, however.

The BES interaction is excellent. If you are currently on a BES, I would highly suggest that you check with your IT department to make sure you can switch devices and/or carriers. Sometimes they get picky about that.

Android, especially with Froyo, works well with Exchange directly. It is not the quasi-push used by some OS'es. It is a direct shoot. If you get the Droid 2, there is a software app on the market called Thunderbird. it links...

Very good Scribed3d, thanks. I actually decided to get both (That's really not a decision is it)... And return one within 30 days. I picked up the Torch and am very impressed so far $200 no rebate card. I am having an issue with SMS I think it have to do with my Tour SMS Crunch or the transfer from Verizon settings to ATT device using the wizard. I should not have used the device switch wizard but just gone native. Just like Windows clean installs are better. I happen to also have a Verizon upgrade coming so for $99 I can get the Droid 2 as well and if it works well for Exchange etc. I will make a choice... I'll have two weeks to get a feel for both and make a choice I should report back on the side by side from a business user perspec...

That may be true and I may even agree but look at Android marketshare growth but more interesting is, that according to at least one survey, 26% of current Blackberry users plan on going with Android next device. I'm just saying'. The real issue for me too is ATT coverage is weak in my house and where I need it most when traveling - although I was just on "Main Street" downtown Charlotte, NC and dropped my Verizon call... AND I can always go back...
