I'm pretty sure it was already illegal for prisoners to possess a cell phone. Another case of politicians posturing to get attention (and votes) which of course, garners more money for them. Great job guys!

Just to clarify, it was never illegal before now for a prisoner to have a cell phone. Once a prisoner is sentenced and turned over that that state's Department of Corrections that prisoner then had to follow the policies of that particular prison. Basically prison is like it's own country with it's own policies about prisoner contra-band. If that particular prison does not allow prisoners to have cell phones or any type of contra-band they then have the right to enforce that policy, but it was still not illegal for a prisoner to have a cell phone.

Just like it wasn't illegal, just against "company policy", for guards to smuggle the phones in to sell for exorbitant prices.

Nice way to compliment a pay check.

Pretty sure breaking prison rules is illegal. Again, this law was unneccessary just like the laws banning texting and driving were/are. Distracted driving was already illegal pretty much everywhere, but of course politicians feel the need to poke their chests out as though each one needs to personally fingerprint *Bleep*.

Being illegal and against prison policy is two different things. Being against prison policy, an inmate can be punished by cell-in (taking away yard time), segregation, being bumped to a higher security prison, or having good time taken away. They CAN NOT be punished by adding to their sentance (beyond taking away good time). Making it ILLEGAL for inmates to have phones, prisons can now add to the inmates sentence beyond just taking away good time.

And by the way, in some states (such as Oregon), it was already illegal for CO's to smuggle cell phones (aka contraband) in to inmate.s

Breaking prison rules is not illegal lol Since when is a rule a law?? Yes they can take away your good time credit, or deny parole or other things to punish you but breaking a rule does not give you more jail time.. It just means you have to serve your full sentence, which technically isnt a punishment because its what you were already punished with..

Why do people get behind a computer screen and think they know everything..
