Um it started with the iMac and iBook and then spread on to have fairly strong name recognition.

It's pretty simply really. Apple tends to be flagrant abusers of the whole trademark/IP/patent system.

They're very popular right now and can throw around their weight to get what they want.

I'm not a big fan of this whole trademark/IP/patent legal system, but it is what it is today. Apple isn't the first company to behave this way, and it certainly won't be the last.

Based on my belief in IP/copyright/trademark/every other type of right basically every patent/copyright/trademark/registered logo/etc that ANY company, person, persons, foundation, or any other legal "person" violates this principle. I'm not going to go into the details.

Based on our actual legal system, the iPhone trademark name, the pinch zoom debacle with HTC, OS X's insane EULA, and when Real backwards engineered AAC to run on RealPlayer(can't remember if it was actually Real) just to name a few. I can come up with more if I do my homework.

I'm singling Apple out for this example, but to me every major company out there has abused this system in one way or another. Every small company wishes they were the abuser.

How is the iPhone's name trademark any different from the Blackberry, RAZR, or Treo?

They're not. It's all the same. I mentioned I singled out Apple for the example, but I think they're all stupid. But, that's the way the system works right now.

I seem to remember they were sued when they first launched the idea of an iphone but the two sides settled.

Don't remember the details, but they eventually settled. It was a dumb waste of Cisco's and Apple's time and money.
