i honestly can not believe people are buying this explaination. complicated color of paint to mix?? really? thats why? i could take the iFail, i mean iPhone, in to home depot and have the paint clerk match the color in about 7 minutes. the issue here has nothing to do with the color. rest assured apple has plenty of white outter shells already sitting in a warehouse somewhere ready to snap on to a phone. the issue here is obviously the signal problems, which contrary to company statement, NOT every phone like the apple device has. in reality, most of the do not. there are also the lawsuits against apple and att to deal with, in addition to possible deals with other carriers to sell the phone (i really hate even calling it a phone, its a grea...

Wow! What analysis! Did you graduate from Hollywood Upstairs College of materials and design too?

Maybe you can run to Home Depot, Krylon a bunch of iPhone 4's, and sell them for a profit!

The fact that the Black iPhone uses the SAME GLASS as the upcoming white one seems to have been missed by the Apple fans.

If there was any problem other than paint (which is almost to silly to believe), it would affect availability of ALL iPhone4s (Black and White).

Here's the thing though...Apple doesn't really have to generate demand for their products. There is already a big demand for the iPhone and iPad. For example...and I really don't want this to turn into an iPhone vs. Android debate...

The Droid X sold out the first day it launched. So did the EVO. But that is suspicious to me bacause both of them were underproduced for some reason or another even though both Sprint, Verizon, HTC, and Motorola knew the demand was there. Verizon won't say exactly how many Droid X's were sold which makes me think they are trying to create a false sense of demand for the phone. Sprint did give the numbers for how many EVO's were sold on the first weekend and it was around 250,000 units. Still, it's a little we...

Saying that Sprint and VZW could know as well that their new (1st gen no less) devices will sell just as much as Apple knew the iPhone (4th gen, with an established customer base and a history of selling out) isnt accurate.

It's a gamble for any company putting a 1st gen device on sale, and they have to weigh the potential sales vs the cost of supplies, and base their decision off of that. The EVO could have been a total flop, and left Sprint with hundreds of thousands of unsellable handsets that will devalue until even if you dump them in BOGO offers, they would be losing money on every one. From the company standpoint, it's better to be short supply and have high demand than to be left with costly inventory. (Same for tVZW and the Droid...

The Droid X was a second generation phone that followed less than a year after the first generation.
Sprint never really had a flagship device before and so had no idea what to expect. The number of Evo's sold first day was over 320,000 and that is with only Corporate Sprint stores, RadioShack and Best Buy selling them.
Their previous best launch was under 200,000.

And just imagine how many Evos would've sold if we had more of them on the shelves! Can't believe that I still can't order them from Sprint's warehouse. My store *still* has a waiting list a mile long...

Why would Apple fix the antenna issue? They have backorders on the white iPhone 4 up the ying yang.

That doesn't make any sense.

obviously this is to complicated for a fan boy to understand so here it is:

The black iphone was released, it had a crappy antenna, apple finally acknoledged it. Magically a week later apple says the white ones will take a while to release. SOOOOO, basically apple is holding the white ones back so they can fix them before released, saving them money on free cases for another wave of iphones.

Yeah um no, you're missing the part where they're both introduced, and Apple says they're having problems producing the white ones, and re-iterates this.

So you're telling me Apple can magically radically change the design in 2 months and is willing to do this for a minority of phones (most individuals wanted the black ones) *while* POing existing customers who bought a black one because the white was faced with delays.

Um no. Not quite. I'm guessing you're not a business or econ major. 🤣

It is very logical for Apple to fix the antenna. They need to make antennagate go away fast in order to maintain consumer confidence.
I think of all of the iPhone launches done to date that this one was the most poorly thought through. Their good name is worth more than a few million dollars to redesign the antenna, which between them and the manufacturer can be redesigned in a few hours. Remanufacturing would be what takes the time.

Apple supposedly spent 2 years on the antenna design- 2 months isn't enough time to redesign, test, and put into production a new antenna. Even something as a simple nonconductive overlay needs to be tested for long-term durability, interference, etc.

And frankly, the biggest problem with Antennagate was the press. Users weren't complaining, and for most people (myself included) there just wasn't a problem.

I think the press jumped on this because consumer groups filed a lawsuit.

Apple has been no stranger to sarcastic marketing:
The whole Mac/PC campaign grossly overexagerated the PC problems and touted Apple's security which we now know is suspect.
In 1995 when Microsoft released Windows 95 Apple bought ads on almost every Metro Bus in Seattle sarcastically congratulating Microsoft for allowing file names longer than 8 characters.
Apple is easy to dislike. They set the table now they need to eat what they have cooked.

They are riding a wave of perception which has their stock incredibly over inflated. Balloons burst when they are over inflated and you find they were filled with nothing but hot air. Everything they do is to contro...

Two months is plenty of time to go back to whatever antenna design they used in the previous iPhones.

I think the antenna is being fixed for all newly manufactured phones, white or black. They will take their lumps with the free case for what is already stateside but anything new will be fixed.

But if the white one hasn't been released yet, then doesn't it make sense to fix it before they sell it?? That seems pretty logical to me, but of course I am not a business major, blah blah blah...........

Actually, Apple is very regimented and precise with their white. Apple White if you will. Mixing this white is a detailed process. Especially for the inclusion of the glass casing. Pigmentation needs to be exact by Apples designers then sent through quality control.

Setting this aside though, the simplest and least expensive fix for the Antenna problem without redesign, is to dip the antennas in a non-ionizing chemical coating to neutralize the elements of hand contact which is a natural enemy to the polarization of antennas. Also, there is an even more damaging but rare problem that could be solved by this. Given the right atmospheric environment, static electricity from one's touch to the antenna could cause severe damage to the final c...

Make it go away and because Apple has such a high brand equity it will be forgotten by everyone but the people who post here.
This could mark the apex of the brand. Companies whose brand diminishes usually shoot themselves in the foot. They have a little less wiggle room for inconveniences to the consumer now. If their next generation of iPods goes well it will make all of this angst minimal. If, however they limit supply they will begin losing their following.
