a cellphone could be a powerful tool while in prison. Make a weapon out of it, call people to do more illegal activities, etc... Apparently a cellphone is just not a cellphone to prisoners

That actually happened on Gangland. The leader of the Latin Kings had a cellphone snuck into the jail for him and he called from the phone and had the people he knew on the outside kill the guy who had turned him in.

Prison is a punishment for intentional disregard for the law and the rights of others. They gave up their rights to the same priveliges when they committed the crime.

A couple of years ago, an inmate used a cell phone to arrange for a hit on a witness against him. The cell phone facilitated the murder. True story. That's why the government is enacting this legislation.

Any clue what happened to the law they were trying to pass a few months ago that was supposed to block cellphone frequencies in and around prisons making having a mobile device obsolete? Its seems that if they could enact that it would make this law pointless.

Because even though they made mobile devices illegal in the prison it doesn't necessarily mean that it wont still get in. It just seems that blocking the possibility would be a better option to pursue?

Both are necessary. A law now that can penalize people caught using the devices and jammers long-term to make them useless even if they get them.

Word. I just remember reading about the government trying to pass a law to jam the prisons around Christmas, I think, and then I haven't heard anything about it again. Just wondering if there were any other developments on that idea.

I'm not totally sure on this one, but I believe that there was some push back from residents living near the prisons about the frequency blocker. I think they were saying that there was a possiblity that the block could potentially affect the mobile signal from local residents. Personally, I believe you could have a pretty localized blocker for just the prison area, it's a good idea. And I did see that Gangland episode about cell phones being smuggled into prisons. Prisoners pay BIG money to get ahold of a cell phone. They can pretty much continue to run their criminal enterprise from the confines of thier prison cell. There is absolutly no need for a prisoner to have a cellular device.

Definitely no need. But if they are just going to use it for piloting other crime sprees while in prison why would they care if getting the cellphone is illegal as well? It just seems like the only way to stop it would be to find some way to blanket just the prisons and not affect other users who are not inside. But until they find a way to do that this law will have to do.

The PURPOSE of having prisons in our society to take personal liberties and freedoms away from people who egregiously violate the laws of society.

The hope is that depriving these individuals of the ability to act independently and exercise decision making skills will encourage such felons to behave after they are relaesed so they won't do anything stupid and get put back in deprivation (prison).

The more comforts and conveniences we can deprive these menaces of, the better. I'm still shocked that we (as a society) still feel these thugs are entitled to cable TV and gender-change drug therapy treatments as "basic human treatment" for those who are incarcerated.

What about me? I don't kill people or break laws and I don't get free ...

The point is they have all done things that got them put in prision in the first place. If you are willing to do something to other people that is bad enough to make you spend time in jail then you have to take the punishment. It's that simple. You do not have the same rights as people that choose to live by the rules when you do not. I say way to go goverment and let's keep it that way
