"Samsung held a huge launch event for its Galaxy S line of Android handsets in New York City a few weeks ago. During the event, Samsung's media relations staff was sure to take some pot shots at the iPhone 4, and told me, "You can hold the Galaxy S any way you want."

Um, not true."

Ok, Blue, I am holding a Vibrant (T-Mo's Galaxy S variant), and yes, it does lose signal. 1 bar of signal if I cup the whole bottom of the phone. Not as severe as the issue demonstrated with the iPhone. Maybe it is different with the Captivate, but I doubt it. There was a video circling the web about the Vibrant, and the video taker was squeezing the phone so hard he was shaking.

There's a few things you need to remember:

1) This issue is very location specific. If you're able to produce it at all. For example, in most places, cupping the phone, bridging the antennae, etc. produces no noticeable effect.

Apple's videos were all done in the exact same environment, and their videos were to prove that situations where bridging the antenna would cause actual performance issues with the iPhone 4 cause issues in other phones as well. .

2) 4.0.1 - The other half of the issue was that although the iPhone 4 would drop ~20db, it appeared to be losing practically all of its signal (maybe more like an ~80db drop). This is because the signal display formula used wasn't very linear. The new one is much ...

Exactly!!! So instead of guessing that you may lose a call, this formula will allow you to know for sure.

I mean really. How hard is it to understand? The iPhone is real and so is the reception issue with this new iPhone. There is no getting around it. You can't sugar coat it. and all the high profile PR speeches Steve makes, can not change the law of physics. The only ones that are buying this crap, are the blind Apple supporters, and Steve knows it.

It doesn't matter if it isn't happening to you or justfinethankyou. It is happening, and it IS a very big deal!

My friend made his stand and returned his iPhone4. He reverted back to his 3Gs. To keep the iPhone4, would've been counter-productive to the point of issue. he hasnt experi...

The part you're missing is that this would happen on any other phone- that's the entire point.

That's why it's not enough for someone of a competing phone to say "I can't make this happen on mine" , it doesn't mean it doesn't affect their phone.

As someone who can produce the issue, I don't see it as significantly more severe than I do on any of my other phones, including my old 3G. I wouldn't honestly dream of going back to my 3G (or even a 3GS) after having the iPhone 4 (the iPhone 4 gets better reception, too.)

Quite honestly, if his problems were that real buying a case (or waiting for Apple to reimburse you or buy you one) would've been the more logical solution. Unless he had a truly defective unit.

I don't understand who you're quoting or what you're trying to say. Who said "not true"? Also, that URL doesn't work.

The thing that amazes me is that no one has mentioned how Apple and iPhone apologists such as yourself are now reduced to using the exact same arguments to defend Apple which you recently poo poohed when made by Windows users to defend Windows against the incessant attacks made by Apple in its false and defamatory 'I'm a Mac, I'm a PC' ads...

I have had the following conversation at least several hundred times over the last 25 years or so

Mac User: Windows constantly crashes,it sucks bad, you should use a Mac, Macs never ever, ever, ever crash, ever. Macs just plain work, always.

Windows User: Well, yeah all computer crash every now and again.....

Mac User: Macs never do, you need to stop regurgitating that Microsoft FUD, Windo...

Is people who constantly trash-talk Apple's technological knowledge seem to be comprised of making a bunch of crap up and referring to anyone who corrects them as a "fanboy" or "apologist."

Making crap up? I have a PhD and I have been involved in computer programming and such for more than 20 years....and I have been using computers since the original Apple II in 1978.

The fact is that Apple's current PR problems with the iPhone 4 are entirely of their own making and are a result of 30+ years of excessive hype of their products.

No matter how small or modest a particular advance might be Apple always proclaims that it is 'revolutionary' and that the new product is the greatest product of its type that has ever been produced by anyone.

They weren't content to say simply 'we made some modest changes and improvements to the iPhone' they proclaimed the iPhone 4 the most advanced (and revolutionary, everything that Apple ...

Making Crap Up Detector Says: True.

"They weren't content to say simply 'we made some modest changes and improvements to the iPhone' they proclaimed the iPhone 4 the most advanced (and revolutionary, everything that Apple does is ALWAYS proclaimed 'revolutionary' Steve Jobs has a bizarre fixation on that word) smartphone ever made and claimed that it 'changes everything...again"
