Magic Update?
How can a software update fix a hardware problem?
...
It's simply improving the accuracy of the signal displayed with a more linear readout.
...
Holding your phone in any particular manner should not affect signal sensitivity. Poor application of good hardware here should really prompt a recall to correct a bad design.
...
I mean literally just about every phone under the sun has sensitivity issues when held a certain way. Pick any smartphone up from the lot and you'll get attenuation depending on how you hold it- this is true for pretty much every smartphone on every carrier.
The iPhone 4 is more sensitive than many phones, but not by an inconceivable amount- it was partially exacerbated by the fact that -depending on how signal degraded- 20db made the difference between full signal and nothing.
...
The phone drops calls when you hold it on the left bottom side. "Attenuation" is one thing, but if "literally just about every phone under the sun" was doing this, you'd hear about it. You know, like we're now hearing about the iphone 4.
...
There's an asterisk there- the phone only drops the call in an area with weak signal if held from the left side.
The phone isn't dropping calls in areas where the signal strength is
...
bluecoyote how much did steve jobs pay you to say that? What planet do you live on that it even makes sense that when you touch a phone it loses signal? I have yet to have ever heard any phone come out with signal issues like the iphone 4 has. You are just to blind to even relize that is has it. Take any phone smart phone in this case and hold it im sure you would not notice a difference. In my office I have tried a test with several android phones and a few Iphone phones and all are the same, they all lose bars when you hold it.
...
And you haven't. 🙂
And you haven't heard of the Nexus One? What about Droid Incredible? Have you used an iPhone 4? Didn't think so, so you don't really have a frame of reference.
...
I meant to say iphone 4

That's the same thing I said and got accused of trying to start a fight. I agree its a hardware problem, and the update is nothing more than redoing the antenna meter to appear it has a stronger signal, maybe boosting the radio power too.
