Review: Sony Ericsson W600
bad reception? you're kidding.
The w600, while buggy as hell, does do one thing right: signal strength. Using Cingular in socal, the w600 holds calls in places no other GSM phone i own can.
I work in a canyon area near thousand oaks where i can only get reception outdoors - and only if i'm using a phone with 800MHz GSM capabilities. But not only can the w600 make and recieve calls outdoors at my office, but it will hold onto a usable signal indoors. No other GSM phone i have tested can do this - including the razr and 6230b.
I will say, however, that the w600 is rather slow at regaining signal after it has been lost - possibly because it's quad-band.
Oh, and beware of the white screen of death (screen goes white - phone never works again). It's already happened ...

i think the white screen is normal ... when plugging it into your computer, or at least that's what se told us with the launch brochures.

White screen of death is when the phone somehow dies and is permanently stuck with a blank, white screen. take a stroll over to howardforums to see that there have been many others with this same issue.

Open up the back of the phone and take out the battery while the phone is still on. this is called a "hard shock" and that usually fixes the problem. i've had to do it multiple times on my SE phones and it always gets the job done.

this is the only way you even turn the phone off once you've got the white screen of death. the power button won't even work at that point.

I agree with you on the reception. For me reception has been nothing but flawless. In the past two years I have owned the SE T616, T636, Z500a, S710i, Moto Razr, V600, V551, SE Z520a, LG1400, Moto Rokr, and the W600i. Out of all the phones above, the W600i and the Z520a have gotten the best reception by far.
Another review I read also mentioned reception issues. That reviewer, like the reviewer at Phonescoop, used the T-Mobile network. So I believe the reception issue is only on the 1900mhz frequency.

you are right, i did test this using tmobile, so it is possible that the poor reception is on the 1900 band. however this is a quad band phone, and one might expect (or at least hope) the phone to performs equally well on all bands. after there are several places, like SF, where i live, where even cingular is primarily 1900. does that mean that cingular subscribers here deserve poorer performance with this phone? i have a great deal of respect for how far SE has come in terms of signal strength, but i still believe they have a little work to do to catch up to high end nokias or even the razr (which gets excellent reception on all bands, in my experience - i tested it on cingular, tmobile, and abroad.
