stores don't get anything from you for your monthly contract. well, they get a small residual (like $1/mo) but all they get is the initial commission from the sale plus whatever you paid up front for the device.

Even better, say I sold you a phone and then 4 months later you decided to cancel you line. Verizon will charge back the store (aka, take back all the commission) and keep your ETF, so all the store has to cover their losses is what you paid up front for the phone (aka, they lose several hundred dollars)

Yes, if you get the phone online, or at a corporate store, your bill might go in the books as helping to pay for your line, but for retailers, its a once and done deal, and phones are paying less and less.

For example, the average price I used to make on JUST the phone upgrade (after paying for the phone) was 80-100 dollars. This sounds great until you figure that for a store selling between 150-250 phones a month, I needed to make around 200 per box for me to make any serious money (make as a manager, what a basic sales rep could make at a corporate store).

This means for ever phone I sell I need to sell approximately $100 worth of accessories/protection plans/etc. just to turn decent money (and keep the people above me thinking store was worth keeping open). Andthis was before figuring bogo sales.

And if just ONE person cancelled, he cancelled out the profit made in up to three other customers, so retention is really important.
