I can promise you more accidents are caused by people playing with their radios than from cell phone use. The same can be said of trying to eat and drink after hitting a drive-thru.
Why not ban talking to people in the back seat? How many accidents are caused by people looking away from the road to chat with the people behind them? Maybe we can just ban any form of conversation in the car, remove the radios, and force people to drive in complete silence. Maybe ban car pools because have you ever noticed a car load of people barreling down the highway talking and laughing as they drift in and out of traffic?
So just sit back and applaud the Feds for doing one more thing to keep us safe from ourselves because we can't be expected to act re...

The ban they are talking about is for TEXTING which generally requires you take both your eyes AND hands away from the road ... which is idiotic for anyone to complain about! Personally I dont eat & drive and only fiddle with my radio when I'm pulled off the road because I feel the need to be responsible behind the wheel. However I have had a friend recently hospitalized because some idiot punk kid decided to text his girlfriend instead of watching the road and this should NEVER have happened! Does enacting laws prevent it from happenning? No, but it at least gives some legal recourse for those who are victimized by such idiocy!

You miss the point digg. The more decisions that are taken out of your hands, the less capable you become to make them. This is the direction our society has taken, and this is why we have these problems. You should not need a law to convince you that taking your eyes off the road is a bad thing to do, and if you think the law will stop at texting, your mistaken.
Yes, accidents happen from cell phone use, but accidents are going to happen regardless of what you try to do to protect people from themselves. If people learned a bit of personal responsibility instead of having it done for them the world would be s safer place, and they will never learn as long as the government does it for them.

Thats a great theory and if it was possible to trust everyone to make the right decision, then we wouldnt at all have an issue. The fact is that ppl are selfish & dont care about others ... and THIS is what laws are meant for. If ppl could keep their foot off the gas pedal we wouldnt need speed laws, but they wont so we do! Does that mean ppl dont speed? No, but again it gives legal reprecussions for those who do. We can even go more drastic to sticking a knife in someones chest ... laws dont stop ppl from doing anything, theres still choice ... just gives consequences for actions.

And btw, if you were talking about seatbelt or helmet laws, I would totally agree with you, that is a matter of personal choice that effects you and only you ... but this is risking OTHER ppls lives, not just your own!

Here is just one more example of how the government feels we are to stupid and they have to think for us. How will they enforce it? We11 with money, imprisonment, force and most likely a gun. Think about it. We give them up willingly. Remember that in the next election folks!!

Again you're assuming texting WILL ALWAYS endanger others. And they're banning all phone use without a hands-free device, not just texting. It's more of my rights as a free citizen being taken away. That being said, if you kill someone else because you were texting, you should rot in jail. Oh, that's right, that doesn't happen with the liberal idiots, either. My bad.

So is talking or texting on a cell phone. They always make is sound "good" Certianly you are not against saving a life?! So we will simply take away any common intellegence and make it a law. Look how often it happens. We can be screwed over for any reason. We just set by, pic our nose and let it happen. But however it will not be long that we will not have any rights left.

As stated, we are not arguing about rights ... cell phones, cars, driving ... all priviledges! You can continue to act like a self centered 16 year old who just got his keys taken away for drinkin and wants to complain about his 'rights' - or you can pull your head out of your ass, buy a freakin bluetooth and be safe ... for ALL on the road, not just yourself.

It's called bribery and somehow it's legal when the communist Feds do it. Yikes. What a sad state this country is in.

This comes down to how much you believe government should control your life. If you believe that a small number of people who are incapable of using the brains god gave them should impact the vast majority of responsible people then you are probably on board with this law. I don't happen to believe that way.
A young or old person trying to text/talk or do whatever with his/her cell phone is going to do it anyway. The law will only make it worse. You will have a situation where the driver is now not only trying to use his phone and drive but also looking over his shoulder and around every turn for cops, which will only take more of his attention off the cars and people around him.

We cannot be protected from all the bad things in life by...
