Why not just make it a federal law?

If the federal government wants texting while driving to be banned, why not make it law? Wait, let me think... would that be because driving laws are under the jurisdiction of the state, and the federal government has no authority to interfere? 🤨

Just another example of the federal governemnt putting their nose in where it doesn't belong. Leave it to the states to decide, don't offer an incentive with our tax dollars. (And I do believe texting while driving is dangerous, but really, it's not the federal government's place to decide.)

Just a side note to this - if you have an Android device, look for the Congress app. Gives you direct contact info for all your legislators as well as information on all new bills.

They are leaving it to the states ... just as they have with the helmet laws, speed limit laws & drinking age. The state has the choice to enact the law and take the money or not! Plenty of states choose not to take the fed money for things they dont want (ex: Idaho no helmet law, Montana doesnt follow fed speed limit, etc)

But what wdfichtel is saying is that don't make it a incentive using our tax money. If the states are going to do it, then good for them, and if their not then ok. But don't take my federal tax money and make a incentive for a law that the feds can't create so this is their way of creating it??? Bunch of BS. Use my tax money and find away to stop inflation of our dollar!!! help the economy create more jobs!!! don't worry about no damn texting and driving thats outside your jurisdiction!!! so why are they even discussing this? this is taken time and money away from the issues they can fix that the states can't.

Bureaucracy only works well when people stay in their lane like its designed for.

Heh, talking while driving is and can be dangerous. Any sort of distractions while driving is dangerous; that's in the driver's manuals in my state.

The person in the passenger seat engaging the driver in a thoughtful discussion is dangerous. Children in the back seat arguing is dangerous. Vehicles, by their very function, are dangerous.

People who are dumb enough purposely do dangerous and distracting things while driving deserve to crash. It's just a shame that people not being idiots will suffer for their actions.

Things like seatbelt laws, drinking ages etc...are under state jurisdiction and those smarmy politicians circumvented this by threatening to deny highway funds if states did not enact the laws they wanted. And of course...the States buckled.
