If this ships out later this year I might have hold off on this instead of getting the HTC EVO 4G. I like the idea of the HTC EVO, but I don't get the impression SPRINT is really ready for it with 4G. Seems like a tremendous leaps lately in cell phone technology and on the near horizon.

We won't see anything materialize on a smartphone in less than 2yrs. With that said, don't attempt to hold your breath.

I think that 2 years is a bit of a stretch considering that in the first line in the paragraph states that the chips have all ready begun shipping out. So, hopefully this major trend lately to top the next great thing will get this chip out. The 1.3 snapdragon is knocking on the door all ready so hopefully we see something early next year... One can only hope so no I won't be holding my breath...

We won't see anything materialize is less than 2 years?!!?
The headline does say that Qualcomm is -currently- shipping these chips, so likely there will be a new smartphone on the market by holiday season this year!

I can't even begin to imagine what smartphones will be capable of in 2yrs!

Shipping the chips doesnt mean the phones are ready yet! Manufacturers still have to design the phones around the chip itself and that kind of planning and developement CAN take time, if not already done! So, who knows ... 6 mos - 2 yrs is a good timeframe to expect.

What are you talking about? Its not like they are in the process of designing it. Qualcomm has designed it and are shipping it off to phone manufacturers. You can expect one of these chips the end of this year to the beginning of next year.

Then when you wait, something else will emerge. I will not end, Technology pushes forward. I personally am in line friday for the Evo. If I waited for the next big thing, I would never buy anything.

lol, well... I'm certainly am not here to convince anyone not to step out onto their next cell phone purchase. I'm certainly not overly zealous enough to leap onto anything as I have learned like with the htc touch pro and palm pre that the tech is only as good as the provider that backs it. Is Sprint ready for this phone who knows. Time will tell and I will follow the forums on it religiously before pulling the trigger. This would be one brick I don't want ending up in a drawer...

🙂 I can honestly say that I have had both those phones under my family plan. My Wife has the Pre. I had the Touch Pro but moved on to the Touch Pro 2. The TP2 is by far the best device I have owned to date. My Wife's Pre gave her a problem 6 months into owning it. Sprint exchanged it without questions. My Touch Pro had keyboard issues twice then my final Touch pro lost reception due to antenna failure. In each case, Sprint exchanged every one without hassle. When I received my final Touch Pro, I upgraded to the TP2 a week later. So now I have a new Touch pro as a backup.

I really am excited for the Evo. It is a work of art. Sprint's network and CS has improved immensely. I have noticed a vast improvement from 3 years ago. And CS? Sprin...

Waiting in line Friday? I thought Sprint is letting people pre-order the Evo, can't you just prepay for it and then move up in the line and just pick yours up?. . .and be sure to share your thoughts with your fellow Phone Scoopers 😉

I don't know if I understand your post right, but aren't all these leaps and bounds a great, great thing? I qualify for an equipment upgrade Nov 2011, and I can't even imagine all the capabilities whatever my next smartphone is going to have!!! I have a few ideas based on where the market is going right now, like HDMI outputting 1080p from my next smartphone to my HDTV, and very possibly my next smarphone will have a pico projector built in by the time Nov 2011 comes around.

Personally, I think all these leaps and bounds are very, very exciting!!!!!

I think where we are at with technology is wonderful. Just like any technology it has to be proven and purposed. Bottom line is it's gotta work. Smart phones are still in their infancy on the grand scheme of things. It has been a bumpy road, but you can really feel that with each evolution in smartphone tech they get better and better.
