First the lady at the BMV told me I have to put this piece of metal on the front and back of my car, just so they knew it was allowed to be on the road and could trace who it belonged to. And now this! What kind of world are we living in?

Just a little sarcasm to show a point. Its not a big deal, if you are not doing any illegal activites then you don't have anything to worry about.

Big difference between a registered automobile, and using a phone. Speech is a right, driving isn't. And if you have nothing to fear, can I inspect your home anytime I want?

Speech is a right, but the right to free speech doesn't equate to the right to transmit information anonymously over a privately owned, commercially deployed wireless network. The roads are maintained by the government, not private corporations. It seems to me that we would have more of a "right" to use government maintained roadways than private corporate owned data networks.
Also, your car is registered, but that doesn't mean the government puts a tracking device on your car and watches where you go. Just because the phone is registered to an owner doesn't mean the government will be spying and listening in on every phone call or reading every text message.
