Loophole
Silly people.
Determined wrong-doers that depend on this as their communication can easily buy pre paid phones from other countries and use them on compatible networks here.
...
True. But I for one will not activate a phone without a valid ID. I won't even take an expired ID for a prepaid account!
Not sure why everyone thinks this is such a big deal. Contract phones have been traceable for ever.
Would you prefer that the gov't just say all prepaid phones are illegal??
...
I see what you did their. That was a pretty good "false Dillema" fallacy.
We only have two choices:
safe or unsafe
sure or unsure
you have to do this or we'll just make it illegal
Common sense in law enforcement will help to prevent "terrorism" far more than ID check at the wireless kisok (I spelled that wrong on purpose... if you've ever worked at one you should know why).
Just so you know guys like Phizzle Jeehad and KBR usually have fake ID's... probably that are not expired. 😉
...
sure, but not because you have a phone u can use it, u stil need to activate it(cdma phones) or have a sim card(gsm) that needs to be registered.
...
Only if the phone wasnt activated in the other country. Otherwise they could simply use international roaming in the US.
...
then it is still registered on other countries.
🙂

The only people who will be affected are the law abiding citizens. Same as the anti-gun laws, criminals will still get them and use them no matter how many laws are on the books. The OP is right, just get a phone from another country that has international roaming, obtain a stolen phone, or get one in someone elses name through identity theft or whatever, use pay phones with pre-paid international cards, know someone at a store who will sell the phone under the table or just enter false information, buy one off craigslist or ebay, I can think of dozens of ways around this.

True, But it makes Reichsminister Schumer feel all so much better.
