The 1996 Act has long been in need of revision.

I think it's so cute that the industry doesn't want to be regulated. Really? You'd like to just do any old thing you want, eh? You'd like to just abuse your customers left and right, without anyone to answer to?

Uh, yeah, THINK AGAIN, HOTSHOT.

Can't be for law & order and against government regulation at the same time. Unless, of course, you don't mind being labeled a hypocrite.

you're right on the money, retrocool. i too think it's time for some changes in the telecom industry. for example why is it ok for the pharmaceutical industry to be regulated by the FDA but the FCC cant regulate the telecom company and shove a leash up their shoots if they want? i just find it to be goofy. i vote in favor of a better telecom experience with lower prices and less hassle for consumers everywhere! NO DATA CAPS, THROTTLING or BLOCKING! 😳

Or being able to buy on the open market a compatible phone on the open market discounted instead of subsidized. And not some bs excuse from VZW or Sprint that it will destroy their much vaunted networks.

Once again, we meet. 😈

I do also believe that a company should compete and make sure they arent "price fixing"

Now this FCC should not be involved in much more other then that. Make sure the antenna's aren't giving people brain cancer and what not but nothing more!!!

If these company's are not price fixing then their is legitimate competition and if you don't like one company then go to the other, not b!tch and complain and mandate they "OPEN" all phones and "Unsubsidized" phones or what ever. The companies can close their networks all they want to where only Verizon phones can work on Verzon networks and Sprint can work on sprint. Is it the best thing for the consumer? no, but its not killing the consumer, hell they also o...

Yeah, something's real, real wrong with hard cash up front.

Make sure you get all the credit cards you can, disrespect, and max them out. Then you can live in debt for the rest of your life and be oh-so-happy.

Giving the FCC power over contracts could undermine the entire economic system. (See Dartmouth college v New Hampshire) Just because it is unpopular does not mean it should be regulated by the government. If it was as unpopular as you make it seem then it would not be economically sustainable and the carriers would change their approach.
If you don't want to sign a contract you can go with a no contract option which every carrier offers.
