Purchase Unlocked Non-Subsidized Phone

Personally, I would prefer to have the option to purchase an unlocked phone with no subsidy (full retail price) and purchase service with no commitment.

As much as people complain about T-Mobile, I think they have the right idea-- have subsidized packages and unsubsidized packages with lower costs.

Here's to hoping that Apple announces that they the iPhone 4G will be sold unlocked / unsubsidized, even if it is through AT&T.

I support this as well. But as with any idea of this kind, Price is a motivating factor. At 600-700 dollar devices, I find this very high in comparison to manufacturing costs. Disassemble a computer and phone. Place them side by side. The computer contains far more internal components yet can cost half the price of a smartphone. Carriers don't care about bargaining for prices because they make it up in subsidies. It's far more easier to raise ETFs rather than take a stand on what they know their subscribers are willing to spend. So now, Subscribers become locked into a one way street. Carriers favor this.

So in short, The few that are willing to pay full price, is not enough to sway change.

what would be better is if the manufacturers were forced to market their own devices and sell them in their own retail stores and online stores to american consumers already unlocked. i know a lot of them do some of that stuff now. but if they were forced to because american wireless proiders stopped selling phones it would make the wireless industry WAY more competitive. companies would be forced to spend money on their NETWORK instead of paying money to manufacturers to get exclusivity on devices.

i know this idea is not brand new but i feel it is warranted to re state.

Putting equal capabilities into a smaller package costs money. Parts don't automatically get smaller by themselves.

Their are also "development" costs that have to get rolled into new devices. Which is one reason why a new "gadget" costs more the first 6 months and gradually goes down in price (That and newer/faster comes out at a price and older tech has to go down to sell... but same rules apply: newer better has R&D costs to make up for, while older has been paid for blah blah blah)

Look at the cost of a CPU. The cost to make one today is more or less the same as it is 6 months from now... why does the price drop? Because 6 months from now Intel/AMD has made up the cost of R&D, building a new factory, hiring new people/retraining ol...
