AT&T isn't reporting a higher "churn" rate so what's really the purpose other than exploiting consumers? If they are worried about consumers breaking contracts raise that ETF but give customers the opportunity to purchase the handsets (iPhone) at full price.

This is clearly attempt to follow the industry leader (Verizon) and grab more profits. AT&T is so unoriginal and follows everything Verizon does. They will never be number 1 as long as they rely on corporate strategies of other companies namely Verizon.

Shame on you AT&T!

You may want to check your temperature. Something is giving you a loss of short term memory.

Until January, 2009, Verizon had been #2 for years. In fact, their margin of leadership (the "distance" between them and the nearest competitor - AT&T) has been shrinking since they took over the leadership in the marketplace by purchasing Alltel.

Plus, ETF's aren't all about preventing churn, but preventing financial loss when people STEAL the company's equipment (it's interesting when you think of it as the company's equipment until it's paid off, or the contract is fulfilled). AT&T's churn is actually quite low - last quarter it was actually lower than Verizon's, which is one metric where VZW has always been the leader.
